i have been a patron of the mountain sun/southern sun empire since they opened in 1993 and have been there as recently as last week. these guys have the model on lock. the open pubs slowly, in well thought out locations and they succeed every time out.
the mountain sun is way too crowded on any given day due to its location and small size and southern sun is often a better choice if you want to get a table with minimal wait or sit at the bar.
the vibe is mellow hippy no tvs good music
quality of beers is solid across the board with fyipa and colorado kind being my go to's
they have a large number of choices on any given day and a few guest taps as well.
service is solid waiters rotate and they all help out so i have never had bad service here
selction of beers is great and the february stout month is particularly fantastic in terms of variety
food is very solid pub fare
thank you mountain sun for keeping it real and a town that is increasingly fake!

I've been going to MS for going on 20 years and realized I'd neglected reviewing it. As the flagship of a beer/food empire now consisting of 6 locations, my patronage here has been the result of the quality of the beer and the experience. I appreciate their consistent devotion and excellent execution of British-style ales - the Illusion Dweller and the FYIPA are among my favorites - and find their food very satisfying and a good value. Service has been good, too, even when the Pearl Street location gets busy and there's a wait for to a place to land. I'll continue to go there when I'm in Boulder.

A: More of a restaurant feel than a brewery.
Q: Their beers are bipolar. Either on the low end or very good.
S: Service was pretty slow. While we had some food, we were also sampling beer. Took them about 10 minutes to bring the beer out. Not sure why.
Sel: More than 10 beers on tap. The Java Porter was the stand out.
O: Not sure how they handle the samplers. It's on the menu but it seemed to confuse the waiter. Then they said if you just want to try a taste you can do that (looked like 1 oz). I was more than willing to pay for the sampler as I was there to sample. So after one flight the next 'flight' came out as 1 oz tastes. Oddly the waiter charged me the price of a full flight. I had told them I was willing to pay for the samples, but I didn't mean bring me tasters and charge me for full size samplers. It was odd.

Love this place. Whenever I'm in Colorado we make a trip to Boulder just to go here. Great hippy food selection, possibly the worlds best fries, and a great selection of super fresh brewed in house beers, with samples flowing freely. Love this place!

Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery is one sure to keep me coming back.

The wait staff was very helpful and well-informed on their very large selection of beers. While waiting for a table you are able to stand at their bar and speak with a bartender, even try a beer or two to assist in the ever-so-difficult decision. Not to say that after trying a few pours your decision will be any easier.

Once seated we had a super friendly waiter with great beer knowledge to assist in pairings. Mountain Sun also has top-notch food and selection, including many vegetarian items.

The beer is outstanding with a variety to satisfy any drinker. The only question I left with is when will I be back?

This place gets five stars for the beer I haven't been able to stop thinking about since my visit: Bourbon Addict Imperial Coffee Stout.

That beer was perfection and consumed my thoughts and cravings during my four-day trip to Boulder last month. I want more. I need more. It keeps calling me, man. *Pookie voice

This beer was bursting with bourbon notes, oak, dark malt, toffee, vanilla, caramel and of course, coffee, but it all worked so damn well together. Despite the high alcohol content, it was smooth, creamy and full-bodied. It really was a work of art.

I also must commend the brewers here for the Belgian Black IPA, as that too was superb. These two beers stole the show.

As for the food, I only snacked on a few nachos, but found them to be packed with plenty of flavor.

But you don't need food when you have Bourbon Addiction. I have the Bourbon Addiction. I need my fix.

Me and my Corn Dog went here on our Colorado trip. Definitely a must if you are in Colorado. Such a great vibe here! Lots of local support. Its pretty lit up with art inside, and outside is a little patio with live street musicians everywhere. Had a flight of almost all their beers, great big selection, the food was very innovative and delicious, our server was very cool/friendly. Its a good thing we got there early because it started getting packed around 5pm. For sure one of my favorite beer spots in Colorado to date.

The food is good for bar food with a lot of vegan options. The service was lacking when we went in, and it wasn’t even busy. Wouldn’t want to see it when it gets packed at night. There is a wide range of beer styles, but nothing truly outstanding. A Boulder institution, but it won’t hurt you to miss it.

Pretty much a restaurant with a small bar in back if you want to order a beer while you wait for a table. Went during dinner, big mistake, long wait, long enough that I sampled two beers (porter and a pale ale which were both forgettable) while waiting and ended up leaving. It was just a table for 2 which shouldn't have taken so long. Let's also add that I tried to go for lunch the day before but they were closed for a company party. Just a poor experience overall and I was quite excited to visit because of the quality reviews and the fresh food that was advertised on the menu.

As first timers to the area, we weren't quite sure where to go for a good brew and some good grub. Someone we met on a hike mentioned we should stop here. It did not disappoint. Good beer and good food. Their porter was surprisingly refreshing, and just what we needed after a long hike. Will definitely make a return trip.

I regularly hang here. Great beer, good food, and amazing service, never pretentious and always let you sample beers. If you are visiting Boulder this place is a must! If you live here you already know this place. I also love Southern Sun and Under the Sun. Ask about the Karma Envelope...

Hmm, a hippie place in Boulder? Go figure. I stopped and did a flight and all were decent with the IPAs being the stars of the show. Place had a laid back atmosphere and service was good, selection decent. Consider the broad range of beers listed I might have to stop again and if you're in Boulder it probably doesn't hurt to stop.

Went on a recent trip to CO. Went to Avery before and some people suggested this place for dinner. Place was busy on a Tuesday but got seated after about 10 min wait. They had app 20 diff. drafts all brewed in house. I got an American stout and a very good burger for about 13 bucks. Best part was the service. About every 5-10 min our server brought over a free taster of a different beer. Great experience and vibe. Would love this place in my Hometown.

Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery was a great spot to meet up with friends and grab a cold draft. I visited during Stout Month and was able to taste most of the stouts on draft. The beer prices are comprable to other places and the staff is friendly. I would recommend.

Tried this brewery/restaurant on a friend's recommendation from his last visit to Boulder. The place is small and the tables are packed a little tight. The place seemed to be very popular because even on a Sunday night it was packed. We were the last groups to get a table without a wait. The beer selection is decent, but not huge. The beers themselves were not bad. The food was good, but nothing that would blow you away. Our server was pleasant but a little slow. May have been due to how busy the place was that night. Overall a decent experience at reasonable prices. Not sure if I would go back, more because there are so many places to try in Boulder than that that I did not like the place.

love this place. always crowded and chaoticly buzzing. not at all relaxing, but a nice spot for a meal and a few brews. huge rotating selection of beers for such a small place, and they are all pretty darn good. service makes this place, smoe of the happiest staff of all time, happy to take time detailing the beers and the food menu. we even got plenty of free beer samples without asking. neat crowd too, always someone keen to chat about anything in there. looks like a pretty small operation, you can see the kettles from the back near the restrooms. they do a really excellent business.

This place was highly recommended so my husband and I knew we had to stop here on our "beercation." Vibe was...well, college-hipster oriented. Everywhere I looked I saw MacBooks, bowl haircuts and peace sign patches. Not really "bad"...just not my scene, I guess. I got over it quickly when I saw the beer selection. Simply AWESOME. I think in terms of selection/quality, this brewpub was one of my favorites in Colorado. Samplers were big, so I'd recommend sharing them if you can.

Service was great...very attentive staff. Prices were a bit much for what you got, but not outrageous. Food menu was a tad limited, but good. I wish I lived closer so I could try out more of their seasonal/one time brew stuff. Overall, a good establishment and experience.

WOW! This place is a real treat!

Located in the downtown area of Boulder, you might walk right by it if you are not paying attention.

It is a bit small, so getting a table took about 15 minutes. However, the waitstaff allured me to stay by giving me a free pint while I waited.

They have GREAT beer (they won at GABF for their KIND beer). I wish I could have tried them all.

The atmosphere is very laid back, with orginal art on the wall. Many people were playing games or just kicking back.

The service was swift and I LOVED my portabella sandwich, which was very reasonable for being in downtown Boulder. This is a "must hit" for the beer and the vibe. I look forward to visiting this place agian.

Mountain Sun (and especially Southern Sun) are wonderful establishments. Southern Sun is a little bigger and therefore easier to get a table at during the rushes. They brew their own beer (February Stout Month is not to be missed) and also have a great selection of beer from smaller breweries that rotates regularly. The blackened chicken sandwich is one of my favorite things on this planet. Mostly though I love that they are laid back and you can hang out and eat a little and drink a little while playing any of the countless board games or read a book and no one bats a lash. Tasters are also free, big plus. I would try to avoid the busy times (happy hour, Friday and Saturday) because it might take you an hour plus to get a seat, but other than that I highly recommend this place.

A- The atmosphere is good but it can be very crowded at times. Good decorations and a good vibe from all the staff.

Q- Quality of both the beer and food was excellent. I got a burger that hit the spot and some FY IPA. Ended up leaving with a growler I liked it so much.

S- The service was good and fast, once we were seated. Our waitress knew the house beers really well and they had some guest taps.

S- The selection was also really good, about 15-20 beers and a decent food menu. They usually have a lot of interesting options to try.

F-My burger was great and so was the appetizer. There menu is not that extensive, I think it's more about the beer than the food. And there's nothing wrong with that.

V- Everything seemed pretty reasonably priced considering the quality. I'd recommend checking out this pub if you're in the area!

Had heard great things about this cash only brewpub in Boulder, so decided to make the trek up to Boulder today to try it out.

First off, the place was packed. We had to wait about 25 minutes to be seated, but the waitress was nice enough to offer us beer samples and burger samples while we waited.

After we sat down I tried the Illusion Dweller IPA on nitro tap. It was quite good as was the Colorado Kind Ale that I tried. They had about 12-15 beers on tap of their own and three guest taps, that included Russian River Damnation, an Avery beer that I can't remember the name of, and another beer whose name escapes me.

The food was good. I just had an appetizer of cheese fries, but my friend got a mushroom and swiss burger and said it was quite enjoyable.

This place also has a great atmosphere. Hippie art and Grateful Dead posters grace the walls.

I definitely recommend this place.

The atmosphere is a bit crowded and odd for a brew pub, but it is still welcoming and the people who work there all seem to be happy to be there and very pleasant, which helps for sure.

The quality of beer was solid. For being such a small brewery, the beer list was reasonably large, with maybe 15 - 20 beers on tap. The manager came out and once he found out it was our first time there, asked us what type of beer we liked and then returned with a small flight for each of the three of us to try. We each selected a full pint and were all pretty happy with our choices to go along with lunch.

The service was great, but a little odd. Everyone in the front of the house seems to do every job - bartending, serving, bussing and running food. So, other than the manager, we didn't really have a go-to person. All of that was fine, just different.

The food was pretty good. We all ate burgers and left satisfied and happy. Now that I live in Boulder I will return some time soon for sure.

Ok first warning about this place: no bar. Anyway.

A small cafe-like atmosphere here; again--no bar, rather a few tables for patrons. You can stand at a bar-like structure, but it's pretty chaotic to do so, as it's the staff traffics the area. But anyway, second warning: if you're not from the area, you may notice the patronage as being--as a friend of mine described them--"over-privileged yuppy scum." Not the fault of the establishment, but I'm just saying...if you can deal with that, then it's not a problem. It is close to a college campus, so take that as you will.

On to the more important feature: the beer. Mountain Sun has a great selection of beer to choose from, including 20, yes, 20, of their own house brews, and an above average list of regional and national craft brews. Focusing on their house brews, I will say that just about every beer I sampled was exceptional. Service was just fine. The place seems busy at all times, but our servers were always on the ball, and very knowledgeable about their brews. Again, I prefer a bar to sit at, but I can make the best of any situation. Food was fine, and prices were very reasonable. Definitely worth checking out.

I made a day trip to Boulder and went to Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery for lunch. Arrived there shortly after they opened around 11:30 AM after walking up and down Pearl Street, checking out all of the different stores and finding myself in complete awe of the magnificent beauty of the Rocky Mountains that serve as a backdrop.

There is a good amount of seating and the brewery tanks can be found in the back. The service here was outgoing, friendly, helpful, resourceful and very attentive. Staff here appear to "pitch in" in all facets of serving and food preparation, which is a rather unique approach. It clearly works and is quite effective. Things started to get really busy as we were leaving.

The vibe and atmosphere here is laid back, as is most of Boulder. They have some board games like Trivial Pursuit, Connect Four, Scrabble, etc. to help pass the time.

The beers are awesome and super fresh. I started out with a Java Stout that was tasty. There was about 15 or so draft options that include F.Y.I.P.A., Annapurna Amber, Colorado Kind Ale, Java Porter, XXX Pale Ale, Blackberry Ale, Quinn's Golden Ale, Illusion Dwellar IPA, Lil Williy, Smoke Screen Porter, Old School Irish Dry Stout, Cleveland Brown, Swan Song and Old Skippy. There are also three "guest handles" too like Avery Maharaja.

Food was really good. I started with the Spinach Soup and got the Spicy Pollo Asada Burrito with green chili. All of the food I sampled was flavorful.

You have the option to order beers in either 8 oz, 16 oz and 48 oz. I always like to see this at a brewery.

What else is there to say about this place? I really enjoyed my visit here. Definitely recommended if you are in Boulder.

Stout month is nice. The place has an incredible selection. It's pretty small and is generally always full and noisy which is not a plus for me. The food is good bar food, fish and chips is pretty decent.
If you want to have selection as far as your beers go and have it on tap, this is the place for North Colorado. I didn't get a beer last time I went so I don't know about beer prices as they weren't listed on the menu which I think is a little ridiculous. I will definitely go back sometime soon though.
