On tap at Vine Street; poured into pint glass.
Apperance - dark with only a hint of light coming in; thin mocha head that only leaves small traces of lace.
Smell - strong notes of vanilla and robust coffee!
Taste - identical to the nose; warming and bold!
Feel - a bit on the heavy side for being only 6%.
Overall - a brew that goes well with a cold day.

great pub great beer. pours foamy dark chocolate brown with a nice thick nitro head. smells like a cup of coffee with notes of vanilla and bitter hops. flavor is really really good, more than just a coffee beer it really marries the flavor well. has the same pick me up power as a full cup of coffee and is smooth and satisfying enough to session all day. my first experience at mountain sun was a good one and i will definitely be back.

First had: on tap at their brewpub

Poured an opaque obsidian, nearly indistinguishable from a stout, with a small tan head that receded to a patchy layer after being allowed to get closer to room temperature. Roasty aroma, dark malts and coffee notes...as expected. More of the same in the taste, though honestly, the coffee wasn't as pronounced as I'd have thought it would be, and I actually got more coffee flavor from one of their stouts. Still good though, so I can't complain. Not quite full-bodied; quite drinkable.

Black body, tan head.

Aromas of java; sweet, life sustaining, nectar of the gods java.

Nutty coffee beans, sweet mocha, bitter espresso.
Dark and satisfying. Roasted barley and coffee joined in fermented bliss. Overselling it? Absolutely, but if you stop by, drop $4.20 on a pint, you'll be glad you did.

Oily mouthfeel, suitable carbonation, bitter chocolate finish.

A sessionable porter.

$4.20 for a pint on tap at Mountain Sun. Dark brown-black. Smells malty, coffee, not too shabby. The flavor was a coffee-heavy porter but it worked in this case. I don't usually dig coffee beers but this one was alright and had a smooth mouthfeel. Very easy to drink.

On nitro at the sun. Dark brown color with a creamy espresso head.

Aromas of burnt malts and lost of coffee.

Taste is very similar. Nice roasty porter up front with a kick of espresso through the finish.

Light dry body with ample carbonation. A very drinkable beer that is quite strong in the coffee flavors.

I've been on a java stout kick lately so I was glad to see this on tap. Not quite as roasty as a stout would be, but a very good beer. It pours a dark black with bright ruby highlights. The aroma is VERY strong and is coffee piled on top of coffee. The flavor is much the same, but much smoother than I would have imagined from the aroma. There is also some lingering chocolate at the end of the palette. It has a med/heavy body and great drinkability.

Well, yup. This is a java porter. Black pour, little head. I can smell the coffee 2 feet away.
Of course coffee gets stronger as I move closer. Roasted malt and raisin appear briefly.
Coffee is dominant in this brew. Chocolate, raisin, fig and dark plum try to come through, but don't completely. Roasted malt is powerful in this one. Wish for more complexity, and I don't really like coffee.

Dark Brown. Fairly simple, one dimensional malt aroma with an added coffee ground element but mostly just roasted and caramel malt and chocolate in the nose. Notes of vanilla, coffee grounds, diverse other malt flavors and a touch of leafy, flowery hops. Medium bodied. Big, considering its size.

The beer pours a deep, dark black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a dry and earthy black patent and chocolate malt scent along with loads of coffee notes. The taste is great. It has a dry earthy flavor that boasts of black malts any coffee. It's rich with the java taste; very nicely done. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good tasting beer. I'm a huge fan of this style, so this is right up my alley.

Served on nitro at Southern Sun. Deep, dark black brew allowing virtually no light to shine through. Thick dark tan head with excellent retention and rings of lace. Nitro apperaance is nice, with the cascading and all. Aroma was coffee, with some espresso seeped in sugar in the background. Taste was heavily coffee, though finished as more of a creamy coffee drink in the end with hints of vanilla. Mouthfeel was thin medium, but smooth and tempered by the nitro. Drinkability lost a little bit due to the almost dessert quality of the brew. Otherwise, this would be excellent served with a dish of vanilla or used to enhance tira misu.

In boulder, on nitro-tap. This one is a nearly opaque brew with a nice head of tan foam that lasts quite long and leaves almost no lacing. Nitro apperaance is nice, with the cascading and all. Aromas are all coffee, deep dark espresso roast, with some nice roasty malt notes, and some caramel, and vanilla as well as some chocolate. Taste is coffee infused with some nice roastiness and some chocolate as well. Good, but a bit thin, and one dimensional for a coffee beer. Similar to many others I have sampled over the years. Mouthfeel is medium bodied nitro fullness, drinkability is quite good. $1pint night can be insane when you are getting the alcoholo buzz and coffee buzz from this brew. You're up all night after 2 or 3 of these beauts...Nice stuff.

Its always hard for me to keep my soap-box politics out of beers and reviewing, so when I prodded the waitress at Mountain Sun about where their coffee comes from I was sad to find out. Starbucks. But seriously, why no semi-local roaster? End Rant.

This porter was actually surprisingly light in its blast of straight coffee grounds. I felt that the light mouthfeel of this stout was actually kind of one of its strong points; it had the essence of the oils of coffee without the blackening bitter-acidity that Java porters usually exhibit.

Nice mouthfeel on this beer as well, light without being thin. This would be a tempting Sunday-morning beer.

To the shock of no one, this porter poured dark brown with a bullwinklian tan head. The aroma, the flavor the whole enchilada is coffee (ok, java). In this eclectic brewpub, which reminds one of a hippy coffeehouse, a java porter is appropriate, and darn tasty.
