Served in a small Nonic.
A: Jet black with a small, but dense tan cap. The head slowly falls to a patchwork film. Leaves bits of lace.
S: Extremely vinous and slightly boozy. Dark fruits are the dominant theme. They bring a hefty dose of raisins, prunes and currants. Traditional Imperial Stout aromas of espresso and pine hops are there but subdued. A tingle of alcohol rounds things out.
T: The vinous theme keeps coming. The dark fruits from the nose form the bulk of the flavor. Molasses and espresso flavors follow the fruits nicely. Bitterness has a pine and citrus bite. Alcohol adds a ton of system permeating warmth in the finish.
M: The slick medium body doesn't feel as dense as the high ABV would suggest. Carbonation feels just about right.
D: This is a nice beer overall, but the Cabernet barrel really takes over the party. It would have been nice to have the regular Nihilist on hand for the sake of comparison. Still, this is a very nice beer.
