a decent beer here, but a strange one. i expected somewhat of a richer beer, fuller bodied and smoother from the wheat, like a wheated bourbon almost, but it isnt that, thats for sure. it has that sizzle on the front of the tongue, almost hot, not alcoholic, just weird, like licking a battery or something. nice look though, heady and dark, smokey looking really, with a crema on top like a good espresso, and the bubbles to compliment like the water they give you with your pull at a good roastery. nose of hops though, it smells more like a black ipa than a stout, and the taste has the same thing going on. pine and roast, char, like a still smoldering bonfire poker stick when you unzip the tent to piss the morning after a late night in the woods. good, but not what was expected. that this has wheat in it is almost a nonfactor for me, i want more fluff and stretch, but its not there. dark chocolate and bittering hops round it out. its definitely unique as stouts go, but its not what i had in mind when i ordered it, and as a result, i was a little let down by this one...

On tap at Vine Street Pub for Stout Month 2011. The beer was served in an 8oz milkshake pilsner glass. Apparently the brew is made using 31% wheat!

A - The beer is pitch black with a 1/2" beige head with decent retention and lacing.

S - A nice mix of coffee/espresso with roasted barley. A hint of alcohol on the nose as well.

T/M - Similar to the aroma the beer starts out with a medium coffee flavor which blends to a nice mix of the flaked wheat and roasted malts. The wheat adds a certain complexity to the stout that I hadn't had before - adds a more full and creamy mouthfeel without the powerful roast flavor. Mild bitterness. The beer finishes clean and smooth with a sweet soft roast flavor. The beer hides the alcohol warmth very well. Good.

D - Very drinkable. It would have been easy to put several down.

Overall, this was a good stout. According to the notes from the pub the malts are: White Wheat, Flaked Wheat, Munich, Crystal 120L, Pale Chocolate, and Roasted Barley. Hops: Tettnanger. OG: 1.082

Note: This review was a re-post from my former account, jmkratt, which was hacked and I lost all my reviews...sorry for the redundancy.

VSP for Stout Month. I guess Dark Force beat Mountain Sun to the punch with a wheat stout. I found DF to be a bit smoother, but...

Pours black with ruby edges and a small head, but it was poured that way. Nice lacing of off brown foam.

Dark plum and cocoa aroma with a hint of black coffee. A bit sharp in the nose and nice roastiness backbone.

Flavors jump around from faint coffee to light anise with some cocoa powder and black fruits. A tinge of grainy husk here and there, probably from the wheat--that's my store anyway--that also provides additional bite.

A nice beer, very drinkable

On tap at the Vine pub. Roasty aroma, coffeem some bannana as it warmed. black with an eight-inch of white soapy head. The taste is mild anise, some mint, coffee grounds, hint of chooclate and burnt parts. The carbonation is right there and it is smooth. Median mouthfeel. Some lace down the glass.A bit of acid sour on the aftertaste, frm being served young.

One of six stouts we shared last night at the Vine Street Pub during Stout Month. Don't know a whole lot about this one, but we all assumed it was some type of coffee stout based on both the aroma and flavors. We were shocked when we read the description and found out there was no coffee at all. Black, smallish head, aromas of freshly ground coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt. Medium bodied, with coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt on the palate.
