why are so many of the stouts from here so hoppy. i mean, this is excellent, and for the most part a relatively textbook example of the style, but its hoppy, pine and bitter and resin, and its almost too much with all the body and roast on it, like its good in real small doses, but even a snifter of it is a lot for me. love the look though, rich and heady like a shot of frothy espresso, with rings as it sips an stiff peaks like tan beaten eggs that never settle. smells and tastes like hops, hints of green pepper with spruce and green coffee, but not together, disparate and odd, but good too, i like it and i dont like it at the same time. it makes me think though, which i will take in this day and age. while something isnt missing here, its not all there either, if that makes any kind of sense. i like the big body, but the hops are overdone. sometimes i think they would do well to have more guest stouts during stout month. if i was tasked with making 20 or 30 or 40 unique stouts over the next few weeks, i would fail. how can they all be awesome and different. this seems as much like a black imperial ipa as a stout, and while i like it a lot, it also misses some marks for me. the jury is still out on this one...

For Stout Month, 2012.
This is your better-than-average imperial stout. No barrel aging, so you don't the sometimes invasive caramel and woodiness. Dark pour as usual, served too cold. The lacing and head were sporadic. Coldness dampers the aroma as well. Fairly balanced with a bit more sharpness and pine than smooth chocolate
Flavors rival that of Oatimus Prime, how funny. Sharp baked dark chocolate comes and goes with earthy characteristics coming through more. A good hop profile, green pine and some citrus rind. Smooths out as it warms. A solid stout
