Druthers Brewing Co. "Against The Grain"
on tap @ Druthers Brewing Co., Albany, NY on 4 June 2016
Notes: Typical hefeweizen appearance: cloudy yellow-gold body, bright white head, etc. Very estery with lots of fruit (apple, banana) and some phenols (smoke, clove, plastic). The flavor follows with enough straightforward, sweetish golden wheat maltiness that it's balanced. Moderately bitter. Medium-light in body and gently effervescent. It finishes dry with lingering fruit and soft smoke. Really nicely done!

Poured a cloudy orange body with one-finger head and lace ring down glass whole time. Aroma has some smokiness and a bubblegum sweet yeast strain. Basic taste of yeast sweetness with fluffiness and smooth mouthfeel and then there's a smoky finish. Filling beer and the smoke adds an interesting twist in this average hefe.

banana yeast with significant smoked malt. quaffable. on tap at the source. Worth a try if you are here anyways, as a minor variation to a common approach to the style.

Served in a pint at Druther's Brewpub in Saratoga
A- Appearance was a bit normal looking. A yellow but bright here with minimal cloudiness and a bit of a fluffily off-white head that didn't stick around forever.
S- WONDERBAR! Smokey, woody fruity, yeasty goodness. After a few sniffs/sips I pinned down the smell and my wife agreed... bacon and bananas!
T- Similar to smell but less of the "bacon" like characteristics and more fruity yeast. A small amount of hops. A great, tasty beer; my favorite of the eight sampled tonight. I am very impressed with the amount of flavor packed into this beer. Well done!
M- Smooth, rich creamy texture; yet really drinkable and refreshing!
O- Wow, what a great and unique representation of the style. The smokiness is a great addition, complimenting the fruity yeast flavor very well. Not only was this by far the best beer I sampled at Druthers, this may in fact be the best hefeweizen I have ever had.
