Appearance: Poured into a burgundy wine glass - pours a dark sienna reddish brown with a finger and a half of red tinged cappuccino head that looks mostly creamy with some moderate sized bubbles marring the foam. The head dissipates very gently with a nice veil of lace that slowly disappears as the liquid id consumed.
Aromatics: Dark and roasty - red wine, oak, dark plum and date, mild sweet florals and malts with a touch of earthiness.
Taste: The brew really soaked up the essence of those wine casks - it really tastes much like it smells - fruity with a lot of earthiness, red wine and oak. The wine providing a light murmur of booziness even though it is paltry 4.5%. There is also a kind of dusty flavour quality nearing the finish that I can’t quite place.
Feel: Carbonation really mellows out to almost nothing. It is a medium body through and through and has a great juiciness. Finishes much like how I would expect the wine from which it has been infused with did - dry and clean.
Overall: This was a great beer, but really designed for a purpose (see my pairing). I like the scents and really loved the colour in the head and touches of red light at the glass edges. Quite a bit of wine in the flavour and I’m not much of a wine person so I felt it a little heavy in that department. BUT this I would say is not your “grab a bowl of pretzels and sit and watch the game” style brew either. Save this for a big holiday meal for other festive time.
Pairing : I purposely saved this for Thanksgiving Day dinner which is today here in the great white north, I intentionally paired this with our traditional wild turkey dinner, plenty of stuffing, garlic mash potatoes, brussel sprouts, sweet buns, and drenched in cranberries and thick rich gravy (and even a little bit of roasted ham)… I was not disappointed. This is an ideal beer for hearty poultry based meal, and you can feel like one of the family when everyone else has their wine, you can put your beer into a similar glass - at least that’s what I did.
