16 years after BeerAdvocate added this beer's listing I'm surprised to be the first BA-follower to review it.
L- Clear (filtered), mid-chestnut brown, pours with 3mm fine-bubble white head
S- Unexpectedly interesting (for a 5% ale). In that rather than being a typical trad-ale it has hints of dried or crystallised fruits; cherry and apple?
T- A classic medium-rich ale, but also aspects of the deep complexity of Xmas pudding's spice and fruit notes.
F- It is astonishing they got this Feel from 5.0% ABV. I even sense 'the mere 5%' in it's finish. In my experience such a sense of zing/alcohol making it's presence known usually happens with beers of say minimum 6.5%ABV and higher.
O- How they crafted this taste and feel from 5% is a complete mystery, I'm not sure whether I've experienced such before. If I had blind-tasted it I think I'd have guessed it as 6.5-7%. The Xmas pudding lick in it's tail is amazing. I rechecked the ingredients listed again to see if they've snuck in fruit or spices or? - nope.
My wife and relatives went on a tour of the Lake District and Scotland. She doesn't drink much beer but came back with about eight bottles from various stops on her trip, and this was one of them. 'Imagine my surprise' this trad looking 5% ale will probably and rightfully be in my Top-20 ratings list of 850 ratings to date[*]. Stunning! I've never been to the Lake District but need no more reason thatnthis beer to visit. 500ml bottle, £3 she says, from 'a tourist shop in Grasmere'.
[*]Ps, Hehe! It's become my 4th highest rating of 852.
