New York, United States

Style: English Strong Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Nimptopsical is a celebration of all things malt. This beer is created with 5 different varieties of malt to produce an incredibly complex flavor profile that yield flavors of toffee, burnt sugar, toasted bread, and overripe fruit. Finished with a healthy portion of East Kent Golding hops from England, the beer has a balanced bitterness and a subtle herbal/fruity hop character. At 7.3%ABV, Nimptopsical gives you a gentle warming that demands respect. The name “Nimptopsical,” comes from Ben Franklin’s 1737 book, “The Drinker’s Dictionary” as a synonym used to describe someone that has had too much to drink.

I tap at The Gate, Brooklyn.

A malt bomb in the vein of Boddington or Tetley.

But, this a big butt, for some reason it was decided to do smoke. It is over the top and I am pushing this pint away.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Capital City Gastropub (Albany, NY).

A: Chestnut brown hue with 1-finger, light beige, tightly bubbled head with good retention and several thin lines of lace around the top of the glass.

S: Heavy caramel malt aroma with toffee, burnt caramel, and bready tones. The hops are herbal and honeysuckle with some light peachy notes. There are some yeast esters which enhance some of the rose and berry/stone fruit characteristics.

T: The maltiness definitely carries this beer with toffee, caramel, toasted malt-grain, freshly baked bread, caramelized sugar and light grainy quality. The hops are nicely accenting with herbal, rose floral, and lightly fruity notes. The yeast character in the nose is not apparent in the flavor, and the relatively high ABV is not detectable at all. A well-done, highly drinkable strong ale.

M: Superb mouthfeel with a creamy, pillowy softness that makes this effortless to drink despite the ABV. Very lush but without being cloying or heavy. One of the best mouthfeels I have had in a beer ever.

O: A fabulous brew from Rushing Duck. I am really glad we checked out this bar-restaurant (Capital City Gastropub in Albany) and got a chance to try this beer. I was a little sad that the experimental Naysayer Pale Ale was not available, but I am really glad I got a chance to try Nimptopsical -- it is a fantastic beer with a great malt-hops balance and an unique, superb mouthfeel. Excellent and check out more Rushing Duck offerings if you can find them in New York State.
