The intense flavor of this black IPA comes from a base of Equinox and Amarillo hops. While the citrus aroma of the Amarillo dances with the cedar flavor of the Equinox, a complex malt bill featuring wheat, Crystal and roasted malts provide the perfect backbone to complement the premium blend of West coast hop.

Fascinating beer. Pours the color of coca cola. Everyone enjoyed the sweet taste, roasted nuts and light coffee, with hops to create a little tension between the flavors.

This black IPA is tamed down a little in the bitterness compared to this breweries regular IPA. This is a prime example of a black IPA. The one thing that really surprises me with this flavorful beer is how strong it is. I have never had a beer under 6% with is much of a kick. But it is not too much, this is so well balanced that the strong alcohol flavor is very enjoyable, I would say this is one of my top three picks for the style of beer that it is.

Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at Mr. Dunderbak's. Served in a pint glass.
A: Essentially black and opaque, with a thin tan head and medium visible carbonation.
S: A fairly low amount of aroma, especially for style. A touch of roasted malts and some resinous hoppiness - but even that takes some work.
T: Roasted malts with accompanying bitterness, resinous and citrus rind hop bitterness. This doesn't have huge hop flavors, but there is a decent alpha-bitterness underneath the big malt bill. Moderate lingering bitterness in the hang.
M: Full-bodied for style, moderate carbonation sensation. The alcohol is noticeable but not overly hot.
O: A decent black IPA, easy to drink - but nothing to make it particularly special.
