Notes from July, 2014:
Northbound Ground Rule Double IPA. 8% ABV. 96 IBU.
Crimson-colored, hazed, with a sizable, though short-lived white cap.
Aroma: Bright, fresh, and vibrant citrus blast in the nose, orange and lemon and grapefruit. Beautifully bitter. All of our favorite hops are here: Cascade, columbus, centennial: the citrus-y C hops, and they're doing it up in grand style.
Taste: Big hop bitterness attacks the palate at first gulp, and slides down the throat, coating the tongue, and slicking the back. Total domination. There's just enough malt to keep it all in place, but the hops are in the spotlight here, and on every stage. Full-bodied, long bitter finish. Citrus hops aplenty. This delivers everything you want in your DIPA. I'm going to enjoy this while it lasts, because I have a feeling it won't be around for long.
I may be biased, but this DIPA belongs up there among the best of them.
Once more, the straight scoop from the brewer: The third in our baseball series, this year's Ground Rule Double IPA is packed full of the "Big C's": Columbus, Cascade, and Centennial hops…dank hops. There is a significant malt backbone to stand up to the huge amount of hops. The malt was kept simple to let the hop flavor be the star of the show. Again, Centennial hops are in high demand and difficult to find. That's because people like them a lot. We used a heavy amount of Centennials in this beer to accommodate.

The GRD IPA was a big beer. The beer poured a clear copper with white head that left a spotty lace. The scent and taste carried pine and citrus. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with good carbonation. Overall this is a solid offering.

I love IPAs and really like the doubles but drink them in moderation as such beers should be respected and NOT over consumed.
I live in NCAL and really believe it is the Hop capital of the world with Russian River leading with thier various IPAs like Blind Pic and RR IPA. Of course Pliny the Elder is the diffinative Double IPA that I believe sets the bar.
The brewers at Northbound have got a Double that kicks ass and is worth drinking!
I hate comparing beers in terms of better or worse, rather hop character, balance and drink ability. Like people all are products of love and care and exibit differing properties. But the "ground rules double" is fantastic!
Appearance: reddish amber with moderate heAd retention
Smell: light citrus
Taste: bitter, hoppy grape fruity complex that gets better as it warms and is I believe very similar to Pliny that I don't mean to call it a knock off as it is slightly sweeter then the Pliny (I drink it 2 x week)
Mouthfeel: satisfaction with a bitter finish
Overall: 8.8% and smooth, respect this beer it is power and grace that can overwhelm you.
DIPAs are not session beers, whoa to idiots that want pitches!

Pours a dark golden color with and off white head. Smell is fruity with dank hops. Taste has citrus and grapefruit with a good amount of caramel malts. A sweet mouth feel with a good hop mix.

Amazing new double IPA from this great brewpub. Light clear amber in color, with no real head. Smell is dank and resinous, leaning toward the pine and herb side of things, with some earthiness. Taste is a sock in the mouth of Summit hops, with a crazy pine-honey-onion thing going on. Mouthfeel is rich and full. Overall a delicious beer that makes me think of a pumped up OB Gubna, and the polar opposite of Abrasive on the flavor spectrum, but just as good.
