Perrin Brewing announces the release of Harden The Hop Up Double IPA, a citrus-forward DIPA showcasing hop varietals from New Zealand and Australia. Harden The Hop Up is part of Perrin’s new Side Hustle Series, which highlights experimental and unique beer styles. Harden The Hop Up will be available in 12oz 6-pack cans and on draft.

A blend of rare hops elevates Harden The Hop Up to zesty heights of citrus perfection, highlighted with subtle stonefruit characteristics at 8.5% ABV. Perrin brewers used juicy, citrusy Galaxy hops in the brew, along with Galaxy’s “little sister,” Ella, which offers a floral nose and slight spice. Complex Enigma hops heighten the flavors and aromas and add notes of pinot gris. Hop varietals from the Oceania geographic region, to which Australia and New Zealand belong, are highly sought after for their fruitiness and high alpha acid ratings.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 3/11/2019. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep golden amber/light orange color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, raspberry, blackberry, anise, currant, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, light caramel, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, raspberry, blackberry, anise, currant, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, light caramel, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, woody, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, raspberry, blackberry, anise, currant, white grape/wine, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, light caramel, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no lingering hop astringency after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, creamy/bready, and sticky/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is an excellent DIPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink for the ABV, with the moderately bitter/resinous/drying finish; not overly aggressive. Awesome Galaxy, Ella, Enigma profile. Extremely vibrant, dank, earthy, and fairly juicy hop complexity; with a nice dark/bready malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp resin dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and impressive style example.
