A nice pour. Dark and thick/rich, nice Yeti-like head (but not quite. I mean, c'mon)
Aroma is definitely not stout-ish nor rum-ish. The barrel aging must have imparted a tartness and it overpowers everything else. The caramel, roasted barley and coffee aromas are there in the background.
Flavor hits with the stout essence first then creeps to a quick rum category--some vanilla, caramel, toasted spices. This beer ends with the tartness. Dark cherry dominates, a bit spicy. not sure the stout and barrel go well on this one. Why is it more sour than stout or rum?
Still, it's not bad

been working my way through the paradox lineup for whatever reason, these beers keep on letting me down. after last nights whiskey barrel porter debacle, i should write them off forever, but the beers all sound so interesting. this rum barrel stout is a step better but a far cry from good beer, its either infected or oddly sour, it smells and tastes tannic like it was done in wine instead of rum barrels. nice pour though, jet black and a soapy sudsy tannish head just under an inch high. it settles out slowly, and smells like red wine turned to vinegar on the counter top. there is some classic stout type roasted barley and bitterness, but the taste is dominated by the out of place sourness that seems to be a common theme in paradox beers. honestly guys, whats the deal? this beer isn't worth a fraction of the 15 bucks it sits on shelves for, and although its got the makings of a decent stout underneath it all, but the infection is inexcusable. overly alcoholic too for a beer listed on the bottle at 8% abv. not awful, but still a total mess. i wouldn't buy this again for half price.

My first Paradox. This is sad how long it took me to try one of their beers.
A- Dark brown/black. Some thinness to it being a stout. Probably the rum barrel aging. Little lacing that goes away quickly.
S- I am kind of confused here, I am getting more earthy tones here that of a sour. Not too much, but just a bit. Not a lot of barrel rum in the nose. A lot of grain in the nose.
T- Sout/porter... not sure. It says stout, but I am getting a bit of porter. Bready malt, slight rum background. Rum background gets pronounced as you pull away.
M- Probably the best part of the beer. Decent mouthfeel. Tad bit sticky. Not much lacing on this beer, but carbonation is present in the mouth>swallow
O- I am glad that I tried this; the $15/750ml bottle was a bit steep, but I have spent way more. Rum-Barrel Stout always gets my attention.
Decent beer, I wish craft Colorado was better at ba stouts

Got this as a beer mail/birthday gift from my home state! Poured into a snifter. Pours out a solid ultra dark brown (edges) and black (center), next to no head or lace.
The smell starts with an almost sour Rum Barrel, chocolate and dark fruit near the end.
Chocolate, dark fruit, oak and earth start off the taste. Slight rum around the middle with a hint of citrus and pear near the finish. Thick, nice moderate carbonation and a slight hint of booze heat sum up the body.
Very nice, wish I had one for the cellar, but no. Thank you Paradox for my first taste of your awesomeness.
