Attractive color of amber in the Orval chalice. A brief foamy cap on the pour, a swirl of bubbles, but not much lacing.
Dry from the start, and rather sharp. The malt tastes like graham crackers, but barely a hint of sugar. Some barrel flavors, but the woodiness is more dominating than I'd like. A hint of winey sourness in the nose. A little whiff of the barnyard towards the finish. Dry and woody at the end. A workmanlike brew in the Belgian style, but it's rather plain. The only sense of fruit is a hint of watery orange. Not very yeasty, and mostly the dry sensation comes through.
From the 750 ml swingtop bottle, 720 bottled. The label has an interesting series of hop symbols, this one indicating one hop, like the single pepper on a mild salsa.

Bottle # 622 of 720. Golden in color; carbonation is active; very minimal heading; lacing that is light and subsides quickly; Belgian yeast all over the nose; fruity on the nose as well, with some malt-forward aroma; faint hints of peach or apple; taste-wise, the Belgian yeast shines through with additional hints of peach; a little champagne in the mouthfeel; perhaps Chardonnay barrels were used in the aging...overall, a pretty decent beer that begs additional investigation with new releases from the brewery.

Crystal clear amber body with small, active carbonation rivulets streaming upwards and creating a thick, creamy white head. Strong, ripe fruit nose; orange and lemon peel; light caramel hidden in the background; some alcohol notes. Big Belgian flavors; light, crisp malts with a phenol character; good bitterness cooperating with the alcohol; light fruitiness. Medium-light body; clean and dry; smooth like glass feel.
An interesting beer experiment. Could classify this as a Belgian strong pale ale, perhaps a tripel. I don't know what kind of wine barrels this was aged in, but I'm sure that imparts some of the nice, complex flavors found in this beer. A grand experiment done well...

Big Belgian flavors; light, crisp malts with a phenol character; good bitterness cooperating with the alcohol; light fruitiness. Medium-light body; clean and dry; smooth like glass feel.
An interesting beer experiment. Could classify this as a Belgian strong pale ale, perhaps a tripel. I don't know what kind of wine barrels this was aged in, but I'm sure that imparts some of the nice, complex flavors found in this beer. A grand experiment done well...

Aroma is of belgian yeast, mostly phenols and candi sugar. Some banana and fruit is also present. Malt comes through as well.
Beer is on the sweet side and finishes fairly crisp and fruity.
Mouthfeel is medium.
Overall this is a hard beer to classify. It feels a lot more like a triple than a blond- possibly because of the alcohol and the yeast.
