1888 was a bad year for London. Tiddlywinks was invented and Jack the Ripper went fulltime. We don’t know who Jack was, but there’s a good chance he enjoyed porter, the official beer of all who did London’s dirty work. With notes of roasted malts and a rich, creamy finish, ours is so dark you could lose a wanted man in it. A fitting tribute to the world’s reigning hide-and-seek champion.

Looks fine, mahogany color, nice foam stays, lace stays the height of the pour.
Smells are mostly roasted malt. The bitter Tastes are created by blending the roasting of the malts, a chief difference between the English and American renditions (Americans tend to bitter more with the hops.) The interesting Taste element of Jack is that it has 43 IBU, but it fooled me as that level makes me cautious and dampens my enthusiasm.
And the mouth is full and smoother as this porter warms.
Overall: A true to style triumph. (But please, cut out the copy about Jack The Ripper.)
After all those beers showcasing NZ's hops, I'm glad to find a more traditional porter.

Poured into a tulip glass.
Appearance – Pours black. Large-bubbled, malty-brown colored head. Low retention.
Aroma – Not much I can detect, slightly sweet.
Flavor – Coffee, roasted malts. Caramel. Hints of spicy hops. Very drinkable for how dark it is. Smooth, but with a hops finish.

500 ml bottle from New World in Auckland; BB October 2014
Pours clear, very dark mahogany with a small light brown head; decent lacing
Feel: medium body; tingly carbonation seems a tiny bit too high.
Aroma: sweet caramel malts and dark roasted grains with dark fruit overtones.
Flavor: moderately strong but appropriate for style. Mainly dark roasted malts with a good bit of coffee and a clear hint of spicy hops.
O: a very enjoyable London Porter worth seeking out.
