Our Honey Brown Ale will please almost anyone, even those who don't normally like beer, love this one! Which makes it a great beer to get people introduced to craft beer. It has a nice lovely light sweet finish and velvet texture. Some people detect the Honey flavor profile and are surprised when they learn that there is no actual honey. It's refreshing in the summer and comforting in the winter which is why it has earned the Flagship title.

Mostly clear amber with a smallish head. Sweet malt nose. Light-medium malt body, fairly sweet, a little nuttiness. A very nice crispness.

500 ml bottle served at cellar temperature and poured into a pint glass. Cost was about $3.50 CDN.

Appearance - pours a cloudy honey brown color with copper cooled hues. Minimal head is poured and retention is lackluster. Plenty of bubbles rise up the glass and lacing is very sparse, nearly non existent.

Smell - lots of honey, elements of honey melon and some caramel notes also prevail. Some herbal happiness round out the beer.

Taste - pretty much like the nose with the honey and honey dew melon dominating. Some herbal hippiness is quite as present as well.

Mouthfeel - smooth and somewhat juicy, carbonation is soft and body is on the heavy side, but the package comes together rather well.

Overall - a beer that seems disjointed at times Hop On Golden Rail nonetheless is easily quaffable and relatively agreeable. It's a beer that at the end of the day is grater than the some of its parts and certainly worth a try as the honey flavours and aromas are cohesive despite any other surrounding distractions,

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; packaged Sept 30 2015 and served well-chilled.

Pours a crystal-clear orange-amber hue, producing one finger of loose, soapy, smoker's-teeth-yellow-tinged froth at the surface. Its existence is fleeting - by the time that 60 seconds have passed, it is replaced in its entirety by a bubbly collar, accompanied only by some scattered splotches of lacing. Distinctly sweet on the nose; elements of honey and brown sugar both tickle the nostrils, with a fruity background vibe that evokes mental imagery of apple pie and pecan butter tarts.

This is a charming brew, but not something I'd write home about. The malt backbone is doughy and a tad biscuity, blending nicely with the brew's substantial caramelized sugar/honey sweetness. The fruity apple flavours are toned down a bit (as compared to the nose), surfacing briefly mid-sip before being subsumed by toasted nuts and some light grassiness. Moderately saccharine aftertaste, but nothing cloying. Light-bodied, and a little on the thin side - the carbonation is subtle, giving this one the sort of smooth, soft mouthfeel that you'd expect from an English-style ale.

Final Grade: 3.41, a passable B-. Cassel's Golden Rail is pretty solid for a honey brown ale, but is unlikely to garner much attention from the hardcore beer geeks. Its English influences seem a bit limited in scope, as this brew is very much a North American Honey Brown (which I would say falls under the 'amber' umbrella) - but taxonomical squabbling aside, it's basically fine for what it is. The flaws it does suffer from - namely, the somewhat limp mouthfeel and two-dimensional, unbalanced flavour profile - are not deal-breakers that prevent me from enjoying the glass, but they do discourage me from considering this a reliable option. Worth a try, but I could take it or leave it.

Pours a moderate head that settles to a ring over a brew the colour of tea. Malt and malt and malt. Malty nose, hint of apple. Big caramel flavour, decent enough hop finish. Overall a tad too sweet.

Not the best and not the worst honey brown in the market.

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a large foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of grainy malt notes with some sweet honey notes is OK. Taste is dominated by some grainy malt with light unrefined notes and some honey notes also noticeable. Body is full enough with good carbonation. OKish but need to clean up a little but the malt bill.
