The current trend in beer is to push the envelope, to stand out from the crowd, to challenge the drinker with extreme flavors. Here at Drop In we’re more than capable of joining that party. We’ve trained some of the best extreme brewers in the country through our American Brewers Guild programs. However, sometimes we need to take a step back and just enjoy the pint in front of us.

An English ESB is rich, full bodied, is brewed with flavorful malts and traditional hop varieties. Not pretentious, not designed to be dissected, torn apart, and endlessly reviewed. Just a beer that makes you smack your lips, drain the pint and think to yourself “I earned this today.”

love to see an esb on an american craft brewery menu, seems few and far between these days, so this was a welcome sight. not my favorite beer we had in here, a little safe and generic, and also seemingly a little stressed perhaps in the ferment, a slight phenolic thing that doesnt usually belong in the style, but its minor. the brew is brassy and clear with an orange hint from the faucet with an airy and slow fading off white head of tiny bubbles, plenty of carbonation evident. the aroma here is nutty and toasted, baked biscuits, honey, toffee, but not too sweet, earthy and malt driven with just a little fruity ester from the ferment behind it, light on the hops but faintly herbal, balanced well enough. the flavor follows, lots of malt character for it being so pale, maybe some honey malt, certainly some maris otter i would think, a lighter medium crystal richness but it stays pretty light in body. as it warms i get some minerals, light cardboard, and even a wisp of smoke. some back end hop bitterness to aid in the finish, not quite clean on the ferment, and off dry. overall a solid take on the style, a little lighter and less refined than the best of them, but fully serviceable. we had a great time here, fun little spot off the beaten vermont brewery path!

Taster at brewery. Copper colored pour, patchy head, streaky lacing. Sweet aroma, brown bread. Taste is sweet too, way too sweet for the style. Almost metallic finish.

A Good Honest Pint pours quickly from the 16-ounce can; there is fast rush of foam that immediately settles into a still amber body. The head is rather minimal, and the lacing is non-existence. There is a subtle lemon nose with a bit of honey; the initial taste is sweetish with some grassy malt on the tongue. Very crisp and flavorful. This is a friendly beer that just invites you to drink more. Easy going with a wonderful feel and zero aftertaste. Drop-In does some good work and are always good for an honest pint.

Poured from a 16 oz can. Pours dark golden brown with initial head that quickly recedes. Strong malt taste with decent amount of hoppy bitterness. Tastes like a pub beer... with a bit of kick. Really good!

16oz can, sample from the brewery.

1st and foremost ... before you drink this brew you must understand the world of EKG (East Kent Goldings) hops. Soft, subtle, earthy aromas and flavors from this hop and within an ESB that is on the dry side yet still so damn malty. Ridiculously well balanced. The 6% abv gives a quick kiss of warmth, finishes clean with me wanting another pint.
