7.0% ABV. 330ml brown glass bottle with generally appealing label and unbranded black pry-off pressure cap acquired at Hopfen und Malz in Berlin, Germany and served cold into a Berliner Kindl Weisse glass in me friend's gaff in Berlin. Reviewed live. Expectations are average. I haven't had a roggenbier in awhile.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Half a finger in width. Off-white/khaki colour. Recedes fully within 15 seconds, leaving no lacing. Underwhelming overall.
BODY: Colour is a very dark cola-brown. Nontransparent and nontranslucent. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Somewhat dull.
Looks okay overall. Not unique or special. Appears adequately carbonated.
AROMA: Heavy rye bread and brown bread, plus some dunkel malts. Sweetness isn't too high, and there's no noticeable hop presence or yeast character. I don't detect any off notes or alcohol. The rye isn't as prominent or spicy as anticipated, but does lend the aroma some nice characteristics. A pleasant aroma of mild strength which suggests a filling, full-bodied beer. I'm excited to try it.
TEXTURE: Lightly coarse and a biteen dry. Medium to full-bodied. Nicely carbonated. Aptly thick. I do think the coarseness and dryness becomes a bit much on the finish, where it really dries out the palate and reduces drinkability. As a result, it's a bit rough and has a slightly unbecoming presence.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, or harsh.
This texture suits the taste decently.
TASTE: Brown and dunkel malts, brown bread, and rye - but the rye lacks spiciness and isn't very interesting. It's bready as hell overall; this would pair well with plain brown bread. No yeast character or overt hop character comes through. Aside from the dominant breadiness, there isn't much going on, and I wish there was more depth of flavour inasmuch as the rye is concerned. Average duration and intensity of flavour.
Simple, but enjoyable. Not complex, intricate, subtle, or nuanced. I do like it.
OVERALL: Drinkable overall, but its bready taste and full, filling feel do reduce its drinkability. I'm glad I tried it, but it's not amongst the best beers in the style. ABV is well disguised, though. I look forward to trying other beers from this brewery, but this isn't as strong an offering as I hoped for even though it's absolutely above average.
