Pivovar U tří růží
Vánoční Amber / Christmas Amber
On tap, ,3L glass for 56 CZK ($2.75)
31.12.2013 (New Years Eve!)

From the menu: "We have prepared in the prechristmas time for you a completly new beer. It is special semi-dark, unfiltred, bottom-fermeneted beer with bitter taste and a medium amber color with a specific hop aroma. The inspiration for the recipe were Christmas holidays. The beer was brewed of 4 type of malt and 2 type of Czech hops using the traditional method. Extract from original wort 16%. Alc. 6,5% vol."

I wasn't sure of how to enter this beer as it's kind of like a Vienna lager, but at 6.4% abv that's too strong for the category. It's also got a bit more dark-caramel maltiness to it. "Euro Strong Lager" seems to fit OK.

+ (indicates "very good")
App: Deep russet brown with orange highlights. Fairly clear. Good retention & lacing. Aroma: Caramel with some burnt sugar + spice (alcohol?... spicy Czech hops?)
Flavor: Similar to aroma. Not spiced, but somewhat spicy. Median bitterness. Malty... finishes mostly dry. Charming.
Medium body. Crisp, not bristling. Very fine carb.
Christmas beer? Yes, suggestion of spice, but not spiced. Additional strength. Some additional malt. Rounded. Polished. Nice.

On tap into a dimpled beer mug

A - Tall off white, frothy head that is retained very nicely and dissipates slowly. Beer itself is dark amber, bordering on mahogany and clear with moderate carbonation visible and bubbles rising at a moderate pace to the top. 4/5

S - Aroma is somewhat muted but that may be the setting (bar area with plenty of food at various tables throughout the bar). Hops seem to be Noble or Czech hops in that they do not have a real strong aroma but are present. A bit of caramel sweetness and a dark bready malt is noticeable to the aroma along with a bit of molasses. 3.75/5

T - Sweet caramel along with a toasted breadiness dominate the flavor profile throughout but their is a moderate bitterness from the hops on the back end. Hops themselves are very light and clean tasting, not overpowering. They end up complementing and balancing the sweetness. There is a bit of spiciness such as coriander, clove, and cinnamon but not overly spiced. 4.25/5

M - This beer stays fairly light throughout the entire profile, lending it a sessionability that many stronger lagers don't have. Does not really linger in the mouth on the swallow and has no real discernible dryness to the finish. Light to medium bodied with light carbonation tickle. Fairly crips with a bit of smoothness to it. 4/5

O - Nice flavoring and mouthfeel combine to make a very sessionable and flavorful beer that sits light and pairs very nicely with various foods on the menu. I drank this while eating the Beef Goulash (essentially a spicy [not hot, just spiced] thick beef stew in a bread bowl as well as finishing up my wife's chicken noodle soup and this beer paired well with both. 4/5
