Part of our Ecclesia Series, this IPA pours a radiant yellow with orange hues and a lasting white head. It delivers a captivating aroma of tropical fruits and citrus zest. The taste is a well-balanced fusion of juicy fruitiness and subtle tenacious pine. Smooth and creamy on the palate, leaving a silky yet refreshing finish. 35 IBU

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Silversmith's Winter Mix Pack; no packaging date. Served barely chilled.
Pours a hazy pale golden colour, with more than two fingers of fluffy, soapy white head erupting from the surface. It seeps away at a casual pace, caking the glass with a messy coat of lace as it's reduced to a sudsy cap and collar; looks great so far. Muddled citrus and tropical fruit notes on the nose: passion fruit, grapefruit and orange peel, with hints of mango and nectarine, as well as some pungent floral hops.
Not bad; the flavours are balanced, though maybe a little too subtle for their own good. I'm getting understated hints of stone fruit, passion fruit and grapefruit over a backdrop of bready, wheaty malts. Finishes piney and floral, with some resiny, pithy bitterness that lingers into a mildly warming aftertaste. Medium-full in body, with light carbonation and a soft, fulfilling mouthfeel that improves this pale ale's drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.71, a B grade. Silversmith's Altar Ego is a serviceable hazy IPA, though I feel like the fruity hop characteristics could stand to be kicked up a notch. Taken together with the piney hop notes, I think it's fair to look at this as a hybrid IPA - and that's not an inherently bad thing, but it does make for a sort of wishy-washy, jack-of-all-trades pale ale that I didn't find particularly impressive or memorable. I'll give this another chance at some point, but for the time being I can only give it a 'meh'.
