Our efforts serve a higher purpose when we dance with local partners. Hive Mind, named in tribute of the collective consciousness that inspired this beer, combined the talents a local apiary, a local mural artist and our own hive of crafters at Smartmouth. Chardonnay, soaked from the oak barrels in which this beer was aged for four months, pervades the aroma and flavor. It is complemented by herbal essence, peppercorns and balanced by a prominent honey sweetness.

Great to be the first to review this. Filled a growler of it today at the brewery with my brother who lives in Norfolk. I was skeptical when he chose it as our growler fill, but asked for a sample and was sold. This is a nicely complex beer, pushing some style boundaries if you ask me.
This is a solid farmhouse meets sour that somehow also reminds me of a german dunkel. The malts and hop notes seem somewhat german at first, candied caramel and toasted notes, and some warming alcohol to go along. Some raisins in the taste as well. The honey flavor is nice, and lends to the sour characteristics actually. The nose is deep fruits and sour tartness, almost raspberry like and prunes. Deep mahogany color with very minimal white head and little lacing. Creamy feel, and light carbonation.
Bigger sips bring out the hops well and the finish is dry. I really like this, one of my favorites that I've tried from Smartmouth. While it is reminiscent of perhaps and oud bruin and the malt tastes somewhat german ale-like, this finish and overall experience is one of a nice farmhouse ale done well. Not as dry and grassy as a lot of saisons tend to be, but rather fruity and fuller bodied. Nice drinking.
