Brew: Prairie Artisan Ales – Resfeber

Intro: 12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass. Shared with a friend.

Appearance: Pitch black, Minimal head maybe .25 inch. Minimal lacing as I drank

Smell: Coconut and chocolate in the foreground with the barrel bringing up the back end.

Taste: Follows the smell. Coconut, chocolate, and marshmallow headlining, with the barrel in the background.

Mouthfeel: Medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

Drink: Easy drinker. well balanced and went down smooth.

Conclusion: Really enjoyed the adjuncts. Reminded me of a Hershey’s Mounds candy bar. Was happy to get to try this one. Would pick up another, don’t hesitate on this one.

“Prairie Dawg” from most recent Barrel Program Release (January 2019).

Viscous motor oil pour. Head retention and lace essentially non-existent, but completely unnecessary.

Right off the bat, tons of coconut on the nose. No coconut shaving floaties, but all the aromas are there. As it warms up the marshmallow really shines, all the while with a fudgy chocolate backbone for everything to sit comfortably on.

The palate gives you all of the same, only this time that marshmallow is the defining component. That rich sweetness hits first, and the coconut serves as a more subtle compliment. Essentially this is liquid s’mores, and the barrel has an influence to where the bourbon gives a nice lightly spiced, oakey bourbon booziness, but it’s not in any way overpowering.

Viscous and thick, definitely fits the pastry stout definition with cloyingly sweet s’mores flavors and a bourbon burn that’s present but drinks incredibly smooth for 14%. Great mouthfeel to this beer.
