Spiced like Christmas Ale, aged in rum barrels and built like pastry stout, Prairie and their "Pirate" series can hijack my holiday season anytime.
Pouring onyx black and leaving inky trails on the glass, the beer pours like an espresso-laden port wine but with a milkshake consistency. The beer wins right there. But as a dainty froth builds upon the rim, an intense and roasty perfume engulfs the nose with bold roast coffee, pie spices, sweet booze, the fruitiness of sherry and a richness of cake batter. Malt decadence dominates the session and it starts with the first saturating sip of fudgy chocolate, blackstrap molasses, java milkshake, tiramisu and condensed fruit sweetness.
With the strong ale simmering away on the middle palate, those booze soaked sugars highlight a spiced rum irresistibility and heightened by the medley of cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg and allspice complements that take the beer from rum and into Christmas. As the flavors of espresso, candied walnut, roasted gingersnaps and rum-soaked fruits dance about the peripheries of taste, the beer's late taste is sweet, savory and balanced with mild wood-like spices, holiday spice and the power of booze.
Full, lavish and coating to the mouth, the off-cloying ale is a sipper and meant to be savored sip by sip. Its perfect for cooler nights, fireplaces and a plate full of cookies. Finishing sweet and spicy, the beer follows with rum vapor, dark chocolate and coffee in a very long aftertaste.
