Name: Vanilla Noir-Zebra Cakes
Brewery: Prairie Artisan Ales
Location: McAlester, OK
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 13%
Date: Unknown
I am unsure of the date, but this beer is at least four years old. I am uncertain if it has held up, and it has 13 ABV. I have drank six-year-old beer that was less and tasted fabulous. I am using a tulip glass. Popping the tab open, a lovely hiss of carbonation emitted; that is a good sign. The pour created a frothy, airy, two-fingered, dark brown head with poor retention. The quick dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The color is inky black and opaque, charting at SRM 38. The appearance is average for this beer; I would have liked to see a longer-lasting head.
The beer's aroma is a complex interplay of heavy, almost cloying vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and cakey notes. The malt smell is a delightful blend of malty sweetness, toasted cereal grains, caramel, toffee, and roasty notes. Upon nosing the glass again, I detect hints of sugar, yeasty, doughy, earthy, and molasses. The beer's rich sugar and vanilla aromas dominate, making it a challenge to discern other scents.
Despite not being overly sweet, the beer boasts a strong vanilla flavor that resembles the store-bought variety with a hint of artificiality. The malt flavor is a harmonious blend of toasted and roasted notes, malty sweetness, caramel, molasses, and char. Other flavors that emerge include doughy, cakey, sugar, soy sauce, Maillard, toffee, coffee, chocolate, and earthy notes.
The mouthfeel is warming and chewy, finishing bitter. The body is heavy and has medium carbonation.
I am unsure what a Zebra Cake is, but I prefer something other than this beer. The beer does present with light oxidation, making it stale. The vanilla taste is fake and odd. I was concerned about this beer's age, but it is a mess after sipping it. The harmony and balance skewed for my palate. I struggled to get past the robust and weird vanilla flavor. I have drank several vanilla beers; The Bruery does one, and that beer has the artificiality I am tasting here.
