Note: this is not an “American Strong Ale,” as it is currently categorized, it is barrel aged imperial brown ale mixed with a barrel aged imperial stout.
Look: deep brown, with a very, very thin khaki head that quickly dissipates. Lacing throughout.
Smell: typical imperial stout smell with caramel, coffee, toffee, dark fruit, and chocolate.
Taste: this is an outstanding brew. Caramel, chocolate, maple, bourbon.
Feel: light carbonation, not as thick as typical Prairie stouts, goes down smooth.
Overall: another fine offering from Prairie Artisan Ales.

I am a HUGE fan of this rewery for their stouts. I don’t live close enough to rate other beers from them. I have had many of their stouts and NEVER rated one less than a 4.2. If you like stouts you cannot EVER go wrong with Prairie.

12oz bottle. Bottle neck features the bottling date of '10/21/25'.
Black colored body, with the thinnest of a mahogany brown back lit edge. Pour brings a tan head that almost instantly fizzes away, leaving an interrupted ring and a minor surface storm. Some oily sheen is left behind but no lacing.
Aroma has alcohol vapors from the higher ABV%, with bourbon barrel, coffee, cocoa, and sweet caramel. Some nuttiness too.
Taste is sweet but also savory. Flavors go from coffee to chocolate, and feature pecans, rich caramel, and vanilla. Bourbon soaked with lots of alcohol vapors coming out of the glass. Aftertaste is long lasting and swirls with all flavors.
More than medium mouthfeel. Slick texture with a little stickiness. Low bitterness, just from the coffee. Oaky dryness. Supportive carbonation.
Good dessert beer to pair with pecan pie that is topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.

12 oz. Bottle
Bottled On: 10/21/25
Poured into a chalice a very nice dark brown/black color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/fizzy/quick one-finger tan head, which also leaves a HUGE oil slick, and some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is very nice, malty, hoppy, very nice chocolate/toffee/coffee, with a very nice touch of bourbon, pecans, cacao nibs, vanilla, licorice, oaky. The taste is very nice, malty, hoppy, with a very nice touch of chocolate/toffee/coffee, very nice touch of bourbon, pecans, cacao nibs, vanilla, licorice, oaky, with a pretty nice sweetness. Full Body, ABV is hidden very nicely, a very nice complex brew, a sipper for sure. Overall, this is a very tasty brew.

Pours an effervescent Hazel/Chestnut with a sliver of fast falling tan head. Super viscous, some head retention & lacing
S: Treacle some coffee, cocoa & traces of barrel that hang in there, barely. Coffee takes over once warm, some chocolate & caramel, hints of cinnamon & peppers too
T: Coffee, some Bourbon, caramel & a little dryness, figs & leafy hops up front. Brownie notes, Bourbon, muted coffee & caramel, figs & leafy hops as this beer warms up. Finishes with coffee front & center, dark chocolate, Bourbon bite, figs, caramel & leafy hops
MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, warming
A sipper, but damn drinkable, wish more these Prairie beers would make their way to Arkansas. This is from my Kansas haul

Pours a dark, murky brown with lots of sediment/yeast particles that do not settle out, float on top, and rim the edges of the glass. Minimal head and what's there quickly dissipates. Nose is predominately caramel and pecan (not getting any chocolate or coffee personally). Taste is more balanced for what the label suggests. Caramel and pecan lead, but barrel, chocolate and coffee show up on the back-end. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Finish is somewhat bitter, astringent at times, but chocolate is quite prominent post-exhale between sips.

Grabbed a bottle at Cheers. Been awhile and this was a welcome return to Prairie. Poured out at 60 degrees F. Pour into snifter produced a small thin fizzy tan head that disappeared almost immediately. Rich dark brown-black body was spot on. Surface however quickly exhibited dozens of specs of yeasty sediment. Overall unappealing. Probably should have been warned to pour gently and skip any attempt at producing a head. Nose was noticeably for dark fruit, some coffee bourbon, vanilla and dark malts. Taste mirrored and caramel was more noticeable. Chocolate began to underlie the many flavors. Taste kept evolving: for a time as a oaky, boozy caramel-chocolate brownie. Then coffee and bourbon took over. The combination of barreled big beers - brown ale and stout was delicious. Feel was a combination of light-medium silky smooth with somewhat (not bad) bright carbonation but toned up by a bit of burn from the big abv.
Overall I’ve had more than a few better Prairie stouts, but I still enjoyed this brew. The many flavors were resplendent…both individually and as an evolving whole. Glad I tried.
