I’ve had eleven different Prairie stouts, and I am a huge fan of this cute, idiosyncratic regional brewery. Regrettably, this is at the bottom of my list. Although there’s a decent coffee and cocoa taste to it, it is basically an underwhelming experience, and the lack of any sort of interesting aroma didn’t do it any favors. It’s not particularly stout-y, either, and with an ABV of 5.5 it lacks some of the boozy charm of Prairie’s other choices. The chocolate/cocoa finish, with a little roasty-ness, helped it a little for me, but this is a one-and-done experience. Sorry guys.

This is certainly intended to be a chocolate desert stout. It is pitch black with a rocky brown head. The aroma is similar to a chocolate milk. The taste is sweet...chocolate, vanilla, a bit of malt and some roasted notes. The body is medium-thick, with a lingering chocolate finish. I think it achieved what the brewer wanted.

Pours a ruddy chestnut with all sorts of floaties & dregs, ugly beer. Fast falling mocha colored head. Zero head retention & lacing, kind of clears up. Plenty of flotsam on the upper side of the glass
S: Tons of coffee, cocoa, lovely nose
T: Coffee, cocoa, vanilla, a little roastyness & dryness up front. More cocoa, some vanilla & coffee as this beer warms up. Finishes a little dry with, coffee & chocolate syrup
MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, became super sludgy & gritty the last ounce our so
Drinkable, but not enough depth of flavor. Prairie does a great with their beefed-up Pastry Stouts, this just seems like a training wheel offering
