Poured from a bomber bottle into a stemmed tulip glass.
Review based on notes taken while drinking the original 2012 release.
A: It pours thick, black and muddy with a skinny, dark mocha head that falls quickly to a sudsy collar and leaves some slippery lacing.
S: The nose is dominated by grain, sweet rich malty goodness with some nice dark chocolate notes and espresso; a bit earthy (maybe woody/oak from the barrel). The barrel follows through next delivering a pleasant boozy bourbon warmth and some hot alcohol.
T: The first notes are sweet malts, dark roasted grain, dark chocolate and coffee. This quickly transitions though and dries out and amplifies the deep roasted notes, coffee astringency and hot alcohol. The bourbon barrel is warm, but in the background and any subtle vanilla nuances are masked by a very dry finish.
M: Medium body and carbonation; a thin for a big BA double/imperial stout but it still is smooth and rich.
O: A very nice, drinkable example of the style, but I found it to be a bit dry and thin which ultimately detract from the qualities of this style that make it so delicious (big, rich, complex flavor profiles and big, boozy bourbon notes).
