A 500ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2013. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Another brew from the smallest brewery in Leeds.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A dark reddish-brown hue with fine sediment and medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of fruity malt with hints of caramel, dried fruit, brown sugar, peel, earthy yeast, stewed leaves and a twinge of sourness in the background. Bit of a mixed bag.
Tastes of fruity malt and harsh stewed hops, with an acrid bitter finish. Notes of stewed hops/leaves, mild fruitiness, a hint of caramel/brown sugar, subtle dried fruit, earthy yeast, cardboard and herbs. Highly astringent and very bitter, with an unpleasant acrid quality. A faint acidity can also be distinguished. Exceptionally harsh upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with prickly carbonation and a thin, insubstantial body for the style. Dries the palate, followed by an aftertaste of bitter stewed leaves/herbs, ash and faint malt.
Not good, especially the flavour. It looks alright, and the aroma is OKish, if slighly flawed. However the taste is very poor. There is an exceptionally astringent bitterness which only intensifies upon swallowing. Other components are drowned out and lost. Mouthfeel is also highly underwhelming. Not a good experience - though whether this is a bad bottle or just too old is hard to say. I may try and re-review at some point, but if you come across this then caveat emptor.
