Snuck over to Rip Current in between work duties specifically for this beer for San Diego Beer Week 2022. Rip Current’s description was “Aged 5 1/2 years in Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels. This Buckwheat Old Ale is a collaboration with Horus Aged Ales released during 2022 San Diego Beer Week.”
Poured a pitch-black color with one finger of frothy-to-fizzy khaki white head. Calm setting underneath. Good watery lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 3.75)
Smelled toffee, caramel, boozy bourbon, honey, leathery oak, milk chocolate and butterscotch. (Smell - 4.50)
Tasted leathery oak, caramel, toffee, honey, smooth bourbon barrel, milk chocolate, red apple dark fruit and plum. (Taste - 4.25)
Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth, warming finish. (Feel - 4.50)
Didn’t taste quite as good as I hoped it would be but still excellent overall. (Overall - 4.25)
