this is an apple and chamomile saison, probably my least favorite beer from my recent visit. nothing here real exciting, and for the interesting additives, its not majorly flavorful, and they dont even really seem to go all that well together. clearish in color for a saison, nice and heady. i smell a lot more apple than chamomile in this, and i dont smell hardly any traditional saison yeast, much more of a belgian thing going on there. mild spice and bitterness though in the flavor, i suspect coming from both yeast and the chamomile, which could stand to be a little more pungent i think to balance the apple sweetness. there is a hard cider vibe to this as well, thats sort of how the apple presents itself, more green apple than red, and a little thin and boozy on the mouthfeel. i think with some tweaks, this could be a really neat recipe. maybe a little more wheat to fluff it up, maybe a little less alcohol, and perhaps a more funky old world yeast strain that would give it some life. chamomile is a tough ingredient, but i dont think its reached its full potential in this beer. still, i like that black bottle keeps experimenting so recklessly, they periodically hit on something really fantastic. this isnt one of them, but its worth a try.

From growler. Pours slightly hazy gold with a medium rocky white head that retains well and leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is honey malts and floral spices with a little apple.

The flavor is sweet honey malt and apples with a decent floral bitter finish. There's a bit of an odd aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an interesting beer - better than the description sounded. The odd off notes bring it down some.
