i know black bottle to be a very adventurous and competent brewery, but i was still surprised to see a gueuze on their menu! not a lot of american producers going after this kind of thing, especially at this small size, but this is the real thing, a blend of one, two, and three year old lambic style beers, and its delicious and expertly blended, even if it doesnt taste much like the lambic beers we are used to from the old world, they really did a nice job with this. its rich golden and honey colored, not particularly carbonated from the tap, but very clear for a beer with this maturity. it smells slightly oxidized, i get the aged hop grassiness, tons of oak and white wine, and a neat fruitiness that gives it its own flair, pineapple and apricot notes, really attractive, and even at this strength, not all that dry as they go. plenty of funk and sourness to it in both aroma and flavor though, with a little more clean acidity and a little less developed musty funk than i like in the style, but come on, this is pretty authentic as they go! slightly hoppy at the end, very woody, and with a cool complexity to it, albeit quite different from the belgian examples of the style. i give huge props to these guys for doing something like this and doing it so well, this is really cool beer, something special, unexpected. the higher abv is never really a factor, but it slows me down a little bit, letting this warm and open up. impressive.
