On tap at Wicked Weed, served in a tulip

A- pours a hazy pale golden-yellow color with a small creamy white head, good lacing as it settles

S- big fruity notes on the aroma, picking up melon, guava, pineapple, overall great tropical aromas. A bit of brett funk is noticeable but underlies the big fruity hop notes

T- tropical explosion continues, pineapple, guava, melon. The young brett is noticeable, but muddled and light, providing just a bit of funk and tartness

M- medium carbonation and body with a foamy mouthfeel and crisp/tart finish

O- Loved the tropical notes on this one with just a hint of funk, high drinkability

Straight pour from a 1L flip-top growler to an oversized wineglass (HF stemware); this growler was filled yesterday, after getting a CO2 purge at Beer Study in Chapel Hill.

Appearance (4.5): It’s got an excellent look: a pale golden-amber body that’s evenly hazy, almost straw-colored, capped by a fluffy bone-white head made of fat and fine bubbles both, dissipating slowly to leave thick, spidery lacing all around the glass—just gorgeous. And it only gets better, with the lacing spreading out a bit but leaving a couple of thick collars at the same time. Just a great-looking beer.

Smell (4.25): The nose shows a wonderful mix of young brett, pale, lean malt body and green, green hops: bretty underripe pineapple and fruit tones, starchy, fresh-baked biscuits, fresh-cut grass, lemons, some mango flesh, candied orange, a little sweet red grapefruit, a little resin underneath, and finally a little dankness.

Taste (4.5): Following the nose, it’s got some nice, young character from the brett primary: some underripe pineapple and a little peppery flourish, but both very crisp, bright, and clean. The malt body, which is pale, bready, and starchy like fresh biscuits, acts as a nice, clean but not absent base for the yeast and hops. Meanwhile, the hops contribute a mixture of juicy citrus character (some mango flesh and grapefruit juice), green, leafy grassiness and a little resin, and finally some bitter grapefruit flesh and a little zest. As it warms though, some musty tones come out a little bit, which I love, because it kind of blurs the line between bready malt and herbal hops. This is moderately complex, with a lot of very different components, but still bright and clear at the same time. I love this.

Mouthfeel (4.75): The body is lean, with a somewhat lighter-than-medium weight and a dry, light finish, while the carbonation is perfectly matched: very active and quick to tingle but never prickling, foaming modestly before washing out. Extremely quenching. This couldn’t get much better, to be honest, given how well it matches every other component of this beer.

Overall (4.5): Yeah, this is a standout, for sure. I like everything about it, a whole lot. The only thing that could really be boosted a little is the aroma, in that it could be a little juicier and more pungent—everything in it is great, but just a little muted compared to the flavor and feel. Other than that, this beer is just excellent, if not outstanding, in every way. Seek this bastard out—Wicked Weed knows its way around hops brett both, and they married the two extremely well in this beer.
