What if our beers were chocolate bars? We wanted to find out and teamed up with Chuao Chocolatier for a delectable Chocolate Covered Stout series. We turned four of their most unique chocolate bars into beers and first up is Spicy Maya Dry Irish Stout!
In this 6% stout, caramel and roasted coffee notes from the British specialty malts blend harmoniously with a rich chocolate flavor from the 132 lbs of raw dark cacao nibs. A slight warming follows from the pasilla peppers and cayenne pepper along with hints of cinnamon.

Picked up this on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. Had been wanting to try if for a bit just didn’t want to get a 6-pack, so was glad to see it at Trader Joe’s. Untappd description read “We are thrilled to announce the release of a special collaboration with Chuao Chocolatier! The good people at Chuao produce not only incredible chocolates but it's also inspiring to see them create joy as part of their company mission. While we are doing a total of four beers over this coming year, we are kicking things off with Spicy Maya, a 6% dry Irish Stout inspired by Chuao's Spicy Maya chocolate bar! Flavor profile: Caramel and roasted coffee notes from the British specialty malts blend harmoniously with a rich chocolate flavor from the 132 lbs of raw dark cacao nibs. Then, a slight warming follows from the pasilla peppers and Cayenne pepper along with hints of cinnamon.”
Poured a pitch-black color with three fingers of khaki tan frothy head. Rather calm setting underneath with only a few bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Bad lacing. Poor retention. (Sight - 3.00)
Smelled chocolate, cacao, peppers, cinnamon, dark chocolate, hints of black coffee and roasty malt. (Smell - 4.00)
Tasted about as good as the nose. Liked this. Got chocolate, chili pepper, cacao, cinnamon, Mexican chocolate, dark chocolate, black coffee and roasty malt. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, spicy finish. (Feel - 5.00)
Damn. Really liked this one. So damn good. (Overall - 4.25)
