This is our variation of a California Common style beer. The California common is a lager that is fermented at higher ale temperatures giving the beer the typical light, but distinctive lager taste that is attributed to the yeast. Adding a small amount of roasted malt, which is not a traditional ingredient in steam beers, provides a hint of roast flavor and turns the beer 'wickid dahk.' The light roasty character pairs nicely with the toasty and caramelly malt flavors and the earthy and slightly minty flavor of the Northern Brewer hops. Don't be fooled, however, while this beer may look like 'one of those dahk beers,' it is light, clean, and easy drinking.

500ml swing top growler picked up a couple days ago at the brewery, renamed to Cease and Desist due to the name "steam" beer being litigated.

Pours a decent creamy darker colored little foamy 1/2 finger head that fades at a med pace, then slows when it gets a nice head covering, lighter but decent lacing, just about pitch black beer with very slight hints of light sneaking through the thin parts.

Nose starts with a toasty malt, a bit of a toasty reddish malt and caramel, it keeps making me think it will have a mocha aroma but it doesn't get to that point, just dark black malts, with some mild fruity like lager notes in the background, touch of an earthy grassy hop, and that unique to steam beer aromatic steamed malt like aroma. Nice nose but a bit too light.

Taste brings more of the dark malts, a little bit of a black malt with some char and a hint of cocoa dust, little caramel and fluffy feel, almost like oats but not quite. A mild roasty note and dark caramel flavors with a little toasty component and mild cocoa dust. Then a mild mineral note with metallic like lager flavor, and little fruity lager with hints of that light steamed malt again. Then a mild earthy slight grassy hop character that also brings a mild bitterness and little bit of that mineraly note. Finish is dry, quite dry, light and airy with a bit more steamed lager malt flavor with a soft crisp lager finish, mild fruity notes, little cocoa and dark chocolate, and caramel, with a bit more of that grassy like hop.

Mouth is med to lighter bod, airy and a bit crisp, decent carb.

Overall not bad, nice big malty flavor, dark malts, with that crisp airy steam component and some light lager flavors, enjoyable and very drinkable.

Poured from a 500ml swing-top growler that was filled at the brewery, into a US tumbler glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a short dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, lager yeast, coffee, chocolate and some hops.

T: The taste starts out very bready with a hearty roasted malt character and lager yeast. Then some mild flavors of chocolate and coffee come in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good variation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you want something a bit different.
