Dunkelweizen literally translates to "dark wheat," and that's just what this beer is. As a darker version of a hefeweizen, dunkelweizen has the same spicy yeast and creamy wheat character of its paler cousin, but with this Bavarian wheat beer has a richer maltiness. Our dunkel has a hazy mahogany color, medium-full body, and spicy, bready aromas and flavors.

An easy pour from a 16-oz. can produced a finger of light tan soapy foam with average retention. Large bubbles retreat leaving a rocky cap, a ring remains. Light brown color, cloudy and semi-opaque, becomes turbid with the dregs added.
Bold smell of toasted pumpernickel with grainy and roasted malt close behind, mild floral and spicy hops.
Semi-dry with mild bitterness, toasted and baked dark bread up front. Hops do their job, keeping malt sweetness in check. Baked apples and a general stone fruit flavor emerge with out adding sweetness. Roasted mixed nuts and a creamy cocoa taste arrive late. The finish is long with flavors slowly dropping off, rich malt lingers with faint hops.
Big body for the style with soft and creamy, lasting carbonation. Smooooth and balanced, session-able with well hidden alcohol. Warms very well, roasted flavor and warming alcohol rise to the occasion.

Cloudy brown color. Small head for the style which settles to rim bubbles. Only a couple of spots on the glass.
Think chocolate covered banana for the smell. Light clove in the background.
Slightly toasted malt start before the classic wheat flavors kick in. More banana and clove. Very high carbonation. Good body even if it leans a bit thin.

This is exactly what I want out of a dunkel. Three pours out of a growler into a pint glass.
Pours creamy with a nice bit of toffee brown head. Nut brown coloration. Nose is what you'd want out of a weizen; clovey, bready and a touch sweet. Taste follows through to the nose, sweet-ish, with banana and clove notes floating around in biscuity caramel goodness. Nice fluffy mouthfeel.
Really good, and a damn shame that my beer budget for the month is drained dry or I'd pick up another growler in a second.

Had on tap at Buddy's Pizza Pub.
Nice thick creamy head 1 finger head fades at a med pace, nice lacing, murky weird dark tan brownish color.
Nose typical dunkel, dark wheat, caramel and biscuit little toffee like, creamy wheat, not a ton of sweet candy but a little.
Taste brings more dunkel, toasted dark wheat, grainy toasty with mild creamy wheat, little biscuit, some caramel and toffee, mild overall sweetness. Little grassy hop, mild bitterness, turns a bit spicy on the finish but still mild bitterness. Sticky and mildly sweet finish, more candy caramel and toffee, darker wheat and little creamy.
Mouth is med bod, nice creamy wheat, decent carb.
Overall not bad, pretty typical for dunkel, nothing wrong at all, well done, maybe a bit drier on the finish would have been nice but I'm nit picking.

On-tap 10/25/2014 at Bog Iron Brewing Company, in Norton, MA served in a stange glass.
A: The beer is a cloudy light brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains wheat, bananas, caramelized malts and a touch of hops.
T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel and bananas. Then a strong breadiness comes in from wheat and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is very mild and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.
M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a very beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.
