Taste: crisp, slight sharp hop, some tart, clean finish. Fermented grain nose. Amber hue, mostly clear, smaller head and lace. Medium body. Would pair with food well. 23 IBUs

As many as their are in the explosion of craft brewers, it is always nice for me to find a new one who makes beers to fit their menu. Even in the outskirts of a town in the outskirts of Chicagoland, the food and craft brewer formula seems to be making a go of it. (If it works here, it can work lots of places.) And the Vienna lager is often neglected in American kitchen... despite its fit. While I did not have Hook & Hatchet with food, I can imagine it works.
It looks like a Vienna. Amber. It could Smell more like the style and offer some hints other than just the malt. It Tastes fine, not too sweet (so it has spicing.) Unfortunately, the Feel seems thin and probably suffers from not enough malt. (Only 5%.)
While their website says they give their spent malt to farmers who feed animals that end up in their kitchen (a nice nod to sustainability), they should use more barley for Hook & Hatchet.

12oz can, no freshness date
A - red hued body with a thin beige head
S - herbal and somewhat foul aroma - kind of like sulfur gas, spicy hop, grain, metallic
T - taste is a lot better than aroma: sweet toasty grain, caramel, toffee, spicy herbal hop
M - medium body, creamy and smooth, finishes with modest bitterness and a residual sweetness that lingers
O - not a bad beer, but the aroma needs some help. I'm not sure why it smells the way it does. Taste-wise, it's alright but I won't be buying it again.
