In some ways, more hoppy porter than black IPA, to my taste-buds: a bit syrupy, with a lot of roasty and burnt-sugar flavors; only touched with fired-pine and very-dead-grass hop elements, which pushes the bitterness even farther; a bit of oaky or maply sweetness resides around the edges. Wet coffee-grounds and burnt caramel notes also perfume the nose—and this is the strongest element of the beer. Overall, tasty, but not wildly noteworthy, nor especially sessionable, and could be a little more refreshing if it had a little less of that underlying viscosity.
