On draft at the Taproom, quick notes.
Great dark chocolate with juicy plum underneath and lots of orange rind. Dark spices with an emphasis on vanilla bean, on par with a deep roasted maltiness, without covering up the light sweetness. Finishes hoppy, chocolatey, fruity, and the sweetness seems to pile up the more you drink it, so does a bit of booze. Roastiness loses ground too. Great stuff, one of my favourites there.

Had in Beijing.
Slowboat's 2L stainless steel growler poured into a brandy snifter.
ABV: 8.5%

A- Black; no light gets through this one. This is an absolutely beautiful looking beer. Poured into a snifter it reached almost to the rim with no sign of a head. I put the beer down on a coaster only to watch the carbonation, coming from seemingly nowhere in the blackness, billowing upwards to create a big, dark tan, pillowy head. Tons of lacing.

S- This is the one area I think this beer lacks in. It still had an amazing nose, it just wasn't quite on the same level as the other aspects. The first thing that hits you is the vanilla. But it's soon overpowered by a big, sweet, boozy nose. The malts and hops aren't really given their chance to shine here.

T- The first few sips almost overwhelmed me with their vanilla sweetness. However, as the beer warmed up and I got about halfway through the glass it became more complex and interesting. The center developed into a thick and rich roasted malt sweetness followed by bourbon soaked raisons and cherries. This is surely meant to be a sweet beer, but there are enough hops to balance it out enough to make you ready for the next sip. The finish is semi-sweet and super boozy.

M- This beer is definitely sweet and can be a little cloying on the tongue, but manages to finish leaving you wanting another sip. The combination of hops and alcohol manage to tame the big malty vanilla sweetness just enough to make this more than purely a sipping beer. However, it is still rather rich and filling.

One of Slowboat's best offerings, this beer is the perfect accompaniment to the cold, dry nights of the Beijing winter.
