A bit too strong to be a dubbel. Although they were also calling this a doppeldubbel. There were conflicting reports on the origin of this beer. It might have been a test batch of their forthcoming 11.5% Magella quad/strong dark that didn't quite reach the target original gravity, or it might be another recipe entirely. Good beer either way.
Pours a slightly hazy molasses-cookie color with a rather quickly falling head that fades to the smallest ring. Looks viscous.
Aroma is pronounced with molasses, raisin, and brown sugar. The fruity esters are heavy with overripe banana, or even cooked/baked banana. Banana bread. So sweet a banana smell it reminds me of banana runts. Purple aromas of grape, plum, and a fresh bag of fruit snacks. Slight nutmeg-like spice.
Taste follows through with the aromas and adds rum-raisin and dark, toasted bread. The finish is very long with a slight, pleasing burnt quality that gives it a bananas foster type flavor to it. A grapey alcohol flavor lasts long into the finish, somewhat of an eau-de-vie/grappa like quality, but subtle and pleasing.
Appropriately medium+ carbonation, moderate hop bitterness, and warming ABV somewhat balance out the sweetness in the beer but by the end of the glass it starts to get slightly cloying.
A really great belgian style beer. If this was indeed an "accident" I look forward to trying the real thing.
Rumor has it some of this beer is happily resting in rye whiskey barrels.
