This bottle was a very special present from my little sister, who went to great trouble to obtain it. The presentation is spot-on, first of all, with a very appropriate label and a wax seal over the cap.
The beer pours a clear medium amber with an off-white head that leaves generous blobs of lacing on the glass as it recedes. Caramel and biscuit malts dominate the aroma. The flavour is classic English amber ale, with notes of caramel, marmalade, and a gentle undertone of hoppy bitterness on the back end. The finish is long, complex, and perfectly balanced. It is not highly carbonated and only 3.7% ABV, both details appropriate for the style, so the mouthfeel is slightly on the watery side, but still very moreish. Overall, an excellent English ale that does a fine job as the famous brew of the Green Dragon im Hobbiton.

On our first day in the north island, my wife and I decided to stop by Hobbiton on our way from Auckland to Taupo. It sounded like a really neat place to visit, especially with both of us being LotR fans, but little did I know that they had their own beer. Granted, I should have guessed that they might based on how important eating and drinking is to hobbits.
This beer pours a dark shade of pure amber with a glowing orange rim around the bottom of the glass. The beer is clear with very light carbonation visible if you look closely (the beer is quite dark). The head is khaki colored, creamy, and dissipates ultra slowly. 4.25/5 The aroma is quite sweet with deep caramel and toffee coming out quite strongly along with Grapenuts (the malted grains are king here). There is a bit of earthiness in the form of musty hay and moss, possibly reflective of the hops rather than the barley. 3.75/5 The flavor is much lighter than the aroma with caramel coming out in the fore alongside a bit of fresh wheat bread and a very light date note. Musty hay, moss, and leather really come out in the middle with an earthy hop profile on the back end. A very light spice comes through as well. While these notes are all easy to pull out, they remain a bit subdued. 3.5/5 This is a light bodied amber that has a light carbonation burn up front that transitions into a watery, wetting mouthfeel that has a touch of drying that lingers after swallowing. The dryness does linger for a bit after swallowing. 3.25/5 As with the other beer available at Hobbiton, this beer is quite watery, although it is tasty. This is not a beer that I would return to, but it is a good novelty item that I will gladly say that I imbibed. 3.5/5
