During my wife's and my recent beer/wine/triathlon vacation in NZ we decided to stop into Good George for some brew and pizza. Between my wife and I, we had several of their offerings in a single sitting since we had nowhere else to be.
This beer pours a pitch black and opaque hue that shows off absolutely no carbonation. The creamy, khaki colored head dissipates slowly to a thin creamy layer with a neck. 4.25/5 The aroma is heavy on the malt side and light on the hops with notes of dark roasted malt, chocolate, espresso and pumpernickel bread. There is a bit of oatmeal as well and just a hint of herbal hops. 4/5 The flavor profile is, as expected, heavy on the malt and light on the hops. Toffee and caramel kick things off before transitioning into pumpernickel bread, although the typical rye note of pumpernickel is muted. Chocolate and espresso rear their welcome faces and usher in a mild oat note as well as a bit of light vanilla. Herbal hops come in at the very end and contribute to the coffee bitterness that is moderate but lingers only shortly. 4/5 This is a full bodied, heavy, wet/coating, and creamy beer that features a light carbonation tickle up front and really no lingering mouthfeel after swallowing. 4/5 This is a stout that I easily recommend to any stout lover out there. The stout style is really exemplified here and this one is a joy to drink. 4/5
