"Mr. Elegante." Robust Porter brewed with smoked malt. 6.4% ABV. 33 IBU.
Served on-draught into a pint glass @ the brewery. Cost was $5 USD/pint. Expectations are average; this is my first beer from this brewery.
No bubble show was present upon serving.
HEAD: About 2cm. Pale khaki colour. Great frothiness. Good even supple consistency. Retention is excellent - about 10 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Opaque dark brown-black. No yeast is visible within. Not the jet black I'd look for in a great porter.
It's nice looking for a porter, but has no stand-out characteristics.
AROMA: Subtle (I.e. light) smokiness. Chocolate malt. Hints of smoked pork. Caramelization.
It's a light mellow aroma. Surprisingly weak for a robust Porter, but generally attractive.
I detect no Hops, yeast, booze, or off-notes.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Subtle smoke sets off the otherwise simple dark & chocolate malt base nicely, bringing more body, coarseness, and dryness to the mouthfeel. A blip of roasted barley.
That's all there is to it. It's simple, straightforward, and shallow, but it's got an easy balance. The gentle smokiness might disappoint those hoping for big bold flavours, but I think the strength of this brew is in its restraint.
More complexity and depth of flavour would be nice.
Full-bodied albeit Overcarbonated. This mouthfeel isn't quite dialed in, but it serves the beer decently.
OVERALL: It's fine. Drinkable and forgettable, with no unique or interesting features. Very basic. The gentle smokiness doesn't hide its shortcomings as a porter, but it's always nice to see more breweries using smoked malt.
