In memory of Old Mountain Phelps, this sweet stout is proof that full rich flavor can come in a brew of modest proportions. Lactose is added to the brew creating a velvety palate and easy sweetness.

Old Mountain sure is black. One inch of fine, foamy, chestnut head leaves an unbroken curtain of matching lace.
The aroma has that strong, sweet Milk Stout signature layered over roasted malt. Dark chocolate, fresh bread, and black coffee finish out the impression.
The flavors are similar to the nose, with sweetness being well controlled by mild bitterness. Black coffee quickly overtakes the roasted chocolate as it warms, allowing both to live in harmony. The finish is long and bitter with roasted chocolate.
It has a medium to full body and a soft, smooth texture. The alcohol is more present than I had expected from 5.1%. It has a mild astringency and soft, prickly carbonation.
This is an easy drinking beer, well suited to casual conversation while relaxing on a late Autumn afternoon. I suspect it might also pair well with a mild cigar.

Had on tap. Pours opaque, jet black in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is coffee with big sweet white sugar and marshmallows. Medium body, medium low carbonation. Sweet and roasty. Nice and sweet sipper. Could do several.
