12oz stubby bottle with blue wax. Poured into Rastal Lawrence stemless glass.
Appearance: Dark Brown bodied beer with thick off white head. The head dissipates into a ring around the glass. Legs noted after each sip.
Smell: This throws a lot of sweet malty flavors (caramel, vanilla, maple) with bourbon and oak.
Taste: Brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, and maple forward sweetness. Light rye spice & hint of dry oak in the middle. Hint of fruity English Ale yeast. Earthy & lightly bitter finish. The finish is short lived and doesn't have much richness that lingers as it should.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied BA EBW. Let's just call it the lighter end of the spectrum for a BA EBW. It feels thin for a Barleywine. It's not boozy. It's a little flat and watery too.
Overall: This is a tasty barrel aged offering by Triptych, but it leaves me wanting a little more richness and depth. Ironically enough, I actually preferred the non-barrel aged version over the barrel aged version of this beer.
