355 mL can from the LCBO; dated Mar 19 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours hazy and translucent, its orange yellow-hued body capped off with half a finger of loose, soapy suds that melts completely within thirty seconds. The surface is left utterly barren - no lacing, no cap, not even a sickly thin collar; looks more or less like mango/orange juice, and the aroma isn't far off from that, either. Mango and pineapple on the nose, along with lesser hints of orange juice, wheaty malts and lactic acidity; maybe a touch of banana, too.
It's pretty mellow as far as sours go, with the fruits doing most of the heavy lifting. It tastes of wheaty, bready pale malts and mango, with notes of pineapple, orange, and a slight hint of banana. It finishes with some lemony lactic sharpness, which blends together with lingering hints of mango and pineapple in the aftertaste. Relatively light in body, with aggressive carbonation that remains lively throughout the session, prickling and scrubbing the surface of the palate continuously. Moderately refreshing and quite approachable for the style, with good drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.74, a B grade. Radical Road's Straight Up Spring Mango Pineapple Sour delivers exactly what it says on the label - no more, and no less. It's about on par with their winter (blackberry) sour, though IMO the pineapple flavouring comes off as a little more authentic/less artificial than the blackberry flavouring did. I don't tend to buy fruit sours in large quantities - maybe one or two here or there when I'm really in the mood for that specific fruit - but this is one I'll likely return to a few times this upcoming summer. Worth a look if it sounds interesting to you.
