Had this at EBF in Boston 3/22/2014. This is from notes. No, I wasn't half in the bag when I tried this. I know that because I stop writing notes when I get to that fuzzy place. BTW the ABV is 8.8%.
A - Nothing too special, a nice ruby color.
S - HOLY HICKORY! Look I gave this a 5. I hardly rate anything a 5. This beer is meant to convey Hickory in spades and boy does it. The brewery has accomplished exactly what it intended. It's a beautiful smell.
T - It tastes like hickory. It's really amazing. Rarely does the intended flavor profile punch you in the face like this. Very well done. The woodiness is not overbearing though, after the initial presentation are flavors typical of a solid barleywine - solid balance of American hops and malt.
M - Just right and I think this helps with the beer - its heavy enough to coat your mouth, so that when you inhale you really get that hickory, but its not cloying and doesn't leave a bad aftertaste. Really well done.
O - Just a great, unique beer. I'm surprised at the low reviews here. I wish I could get it in MA. The brewers were great dudes too, after I came back for 2nds I shot the breeze with the brewer and his crazy beard/mustache thing for a bit. Great guys. I ended up trying all their stuff and wasn't disappointed.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
