a really wonderfully crafted barleywine here, with elements from both american and english styles, but imagine my surprise when i cracked open a crowler of what i thought was going to be their hazy ipa, and got this instead! looks like whoever filled these at the brewery for my father in law who brought them back for me switched up the labels, although i have not yet tried the one marked barleywine, which i believe is in fact the hazy. anyway, a big beer at a time when it maybe have been a little inappropriate, but i loved this nevertheless. nice deep reddish brown color with a creamy, tan, and tall head, thick like shaving cream, light glossy look to this, but also just off clear. the nose is incredible, i get toffee and caramel, almonds and pralines, raisins and butter cake, lots of oak too, this must be barrel aged, or at least have some oak spirals in it, vanilla with it, and all the malt layers in the world but a sort of graham cracker crust vibe to me overall. the flavor is just as good, there is nice richness and decadence to this without it being diabetic, and i get rum and whiskey, maple and molasses, and quite a lot of wood. some cool spice features here too, orange peel and even trace ginger as it warms, hops on the finish add needed bitterness and complimentary herbal note, a lot of alcohol but its not out of place, and english caramel maltiness, peanut brittle, and cardboard. i adored this, my mother in law did to believe it or not, and i would rank this among my favorite recent barleywines. great brew here from worthy!
