Body is almost pitch black, forming a dense cocoa head with an aggressive pour, retention of a few minutes.
True rum characteristics in the aroma, balanced by the black liquorice characteristic of Blackburne, fainter roasted malt notes in the background.
Decadent medley of rich dark cocoa and fruity dried fruit from the rum, coming through most prominently in the finish, as well as a bit of that liquorice sweetness; and there is a decent amount of residual sugars, but it's not cloying as some IS' can get; soft and silky feel, slightly syrupy, full bodied, with fine carbonation; finish is manages to have a bit of balance with the roast bitterness, alcohol heat, but it is on the sweet side.
A tasty iteration of the base stout, the rum barrel is more than a gimmick, it truly adds another, pleasing dimension.
