Tap @ Toronado San Diego. Gold with medium head and light lacing. Aroma of fruity chalk. Flavor extremely sweet with slight citrus. Very little hoppy presence except for the bitterness throughout. Medium carbonation with a great mouthfeel. Not my perfect cup of tea, but definitely top tier for other taste buds.

Type: 16-oz. draft
Glass: Pint glass
From: Alpine Beer Company Pub in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $5.00
Purchased: Oct. 15, 2015
Consumed: Oct. 15, 2015
Misc.: Portion (all?) of purchase goes to ALS
Poured a golden, pale, clear color with two fingers of frothy, white head when I got it. Lots of bubble streams coming up from the bottom. Very good circular, spiderweb lacing on the sides of the glass. Above average retention. (Sight - 4.00)
Smelled orange blossom, floral, Citra, tropical, mango, pineapple, light New Zealand or German (initially thought Hallertau, later went with Pacific Hallertau after looking up NZ hops) and buttery malts. (Smell - 4.00)
Tasted similar to the end of the nose. Got those buttery Pacific Hallertau, mango, spoiled orange rind, tropical, orange creamscicle, buttery malts, floral and Citra pulp. (Taste - 3.50)
Medium-to-light body. Creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. (Feel - 3.25)
This beer started out good with the look and the nose, but nope. (Overall - 3.50)

On tap at the brewpub in Alpine, CA
Half Pint pour – 08/01/2014
A: Lupulin Star pours a darker amber than most the other Alpine IPA’s but still with great clarity and effervescence. Smallish compacted white cap that swirls out with minimal hang time. Looks pleasant enough.
S: Smells more malty than I was expecting that is for sure. A little bit of caramel and some bread here. I get a few lemony hops mixed in with a touch of earthy herbals. Somewhat of a letdown for an Alpine IPA that is boasting 6 new hop varietals.
T: Tastes much the same with a more pronounced malt sweetness and bready likeness. There is a decent hop smattering that is mostly zesty lemon and herbals with faint evergreen notes. Some green melon or unripe berry notes. Hard to describe really. This has a restrained amount of bitterness with no alcohol to mention making for a very smooth drink. Only lightly resinous. Again this was somewhat disappointing for me.
M: The feel is very slick on the palate and only lightly filling. Smooth and frothy carb. with a very dry finish and some slight lingering effects.
D: A pretty big miss from one of my favorite breweries. Balance is fair enough but really just drab and weak all together. If you are gonna call this Lupulin Star and use some 6 different experimental hop varietals it shouldn’t come across as a malty Pale Ale. My opinion at least…glad I didn’t go full pint here just not worth the hunt. For charity though!
