Type: 32-oz. growler
Glass: Clear 14.75-oz. porter/stout tulip
From: Alpine Beer Company in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $7.50 (I think)
Purchased: April 13, 2017
Consumed: April 13, 2017
Reviewed as: American IPA
Misc.: Growled April 13, 2017
Had tried every beer from this series and was anxious to try the Simcoe one. Usually one of my favorite hops, but for sure had never tried it solo. I usually get spice with it and expected it in this as well.
Poured a gold clear color with two fingers of frothy white head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Very good lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 4.00)
Smelled spicy Simcoe obviously up front Also passion fruit, stone fruit, earthy pine, resin, pineapple, melon, cantaloupe, orange blossom and persimmon. (Smell - 4.25)
Taste wasn’t as good as the nose, proving this bad boy needs some friends. Got the spiciness up front, followed by the melon family (melon, persimmon, cantaloupe) and the orange family (orange, orange blossom and kumquat). Also floral, passion fruit, stone fruit, pineapple, mango (wishful?) and earthy resin. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Long, spicy finish. (Feel - 4.25)
This was really good. Liked it a lot. Looking back, this (4.09) ranks third out of the 12 I’ve had so far, only trailing Mosaic (4.26) and Citra (4.17). Lovely. (Overall - 4.00)
